General Information:

Decongestants stimulate alpha-adrenergic receptors of vascular smooth muscle (vasoconstriction, pressor effects, nasal decongestion) and some (such as pseudoephedrine) retains beta-adrenergic properties. Constriction in the mucous membranes results in their shrinkage; this promotes drainage, thus improving ventilation and the stuffy feeling. Patients currently taking an MAOI (or those who have taken them in the past 2 weeks) should not use this product. In pregnancy give only when clearly needed; contraindicated in the nursing mother due to higher than usual risks to infants.
