Triage Questions About Treatment or Related Issues

  • Severe pain or fever for greater than 5 days may indicate infection, contact physician.
  • Acetaminophen is not effective for redness or swelling – use an anti-inflammatory agent.

General Information

  • Acetaminophen is an analgesic/antipyretic.
  • The mechanism of action of analgesia is unclear. It reduces fever by a direct action on the hypothalamic heat regulating centers, which increases dissipation of body heat (via vasodilation and sweating).
  • Acetaminophen is pregnancy category B. It crosses the placenta. It is routinely used during all stages of pregnancy; when used in therapeutic doses, it appears safe for short-term use. Continuous high daily doses may not be safe.

Adverse Reactions/Side Effects

  • Severe liver damage in chronic overusage.
  • Contraindicated in patients with acetaminophen hypersensitivity.
  • Contraindicated in alcoholic patients.

Natural Products or Nutritional Interactions

  • Activated charcoal will reduce acetaminophen absorption when administered soon after overdosage, and may prevent toxicity.
  • Some agents may increase risk for liver damage when chronically administered with acetaminophen; ask your doctor if acetaminophen is a good choice for you.
