Adult Dosing Guidelines
- 325mg-650mg every 4-6 hours, or 1000mg every 6-8 hours, not to exceed 4000mg per 24 hours, unless directed by a physician.

Triage Questions About Treatment or Related Issues
- Severe pain or fever for greater than 5 days may indicate infection, contact physician.
- Acetaminophen is not effective for redness or swelling – use an anti-inflammatory agent.
General Information
- Acetaminophen is an analgesic/antipyretic.
- The mechanism of action of analgesia is unclear. It reduces fever by a direct action on the hypothalamic heat regulating centers, which increases dissipation of body heat (via vasodilation and sweating).
- Acetaminophen is pregnancy category B. It crosses the placenta. It is routinely used during all stages of pregnancy; when used in therapeutic doses, it appears safe for short-term use. Continuous high daily doses may not be safe.
Adverse Reactions/Side Effects
- Severe liver damage in chronic overusage.
- Contraindicated in patients with acetaminophen hypersensitivity.
- Contraindicated in alcoholic patients.
Natural Products or Nutritional Interactions
- Activated charcoal will reduce acetaminophen absorption when administered soon after overdosage, and may prevent toxicity.
- Some agents may increase risk for liver damage when chronically administered with acetaminophen; ask your doctor if acetaminophen is a good choice for you.
