Triage Questions About Treatment or Related Issues Does the patient’s skin have one or more areas of inflammation or erythema? Has the condition persisted for more than 7 days? Does the patient have any allergies or sensitive skin that would prohibit the use of an external product? Has the patient already used any OTC or prescription medications for the condition? Does the condition cover large areas of the body or sensitive skin areas?
General Information Calamine is a skin protectant that dries the oozing and weeping of poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac. Pramoxine HCl is an external analgesic, which penetrates the skin to numb pain receptors and other structures directly beneath the epithelial layers. Pramoxine does not share the toxicities of other analgesics and sensitization is rare. Its analgesic effect usually occurs 3-5 minutes after application. Before application, wash affected areas of skin and shake bottle well. Avoid contact with eyes and rinse eyes immediately if contact occurs. If condition persists beyond 7 days, worsens, or spreads to the face contact a physician. All clothes that may have come in contact with the plant will also needed to be washed in warm to hot water. |
