Aerosol Spray: Benzocaine 20%

Adult Dosing Guidelines

  • For management of pain and itching associated with sunburn, minor burns, insect bites and stings:
    Topical: Hold can three to five inches away from injured area and spray until surface is wet. Reapply as needed. Not for prolonged use.

 

Pediatric Dosing Guidelines

  • Same as adult. Do not use in children less than 1 year of age.

  • Has the patient ever had an allergic reaction to benzocaine?
  • How severe is the condition to be treated?
  • How large of an area needs treatment?

 
General Information

Benzocaine inhibits the conduction of nerve impulses from sensory neurons by altering the cell membrane permeability to ions. Peak effect is reached in less than five minutes. Duration of action is approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Do not use in children less than 1 year of age. Classified as Pregnancy Category C (safety for use during pregnancy not established). Use in pregnant women only when benefits outweigh the potential harmful effects to the fetus.


Adverse Reactions/Side Effects
Hypersensitivity: urticaria, edema, dermatitis, bronchospasm, shock, or an anaphylactic response.
