Melvin
Liter Adjunct Professor Clinical Pharmacist,
Medicine Dr. Liter established the first oncology pharmacy programs for the U.S. Army from 1971 through 1989. These included the programs at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital in Washington, D.C., Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the re-establishment of the program at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, Calif. In these programs, Dr. Liter oversaw the preparation and treatment of cancer patients, where he started IVs, performed bone-marrow aspirates and biopsies, conducted physical assessments, gave chemotherapy, and trained pharmacy technicians, nurses and LPNs. He also followed clinical patients, initiating therapy as needed, according to protocol. Dr. Liter retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel in 1990, and the Army named the "Mel Liter Clinical Pharmacy Award" in his honor. The award is presented each year to a new recipient and is sponsored by Bristol Myers-Squibb. Since
retiring from the Army in 1990 and joining the College of Pharmacy,
Dr. Liter continues to be involved in oncology and has increased
his specialization in pain management. He
now speaks for eight drug companies and presents local, national and
international programs on pain management.
He is on the editorial board of Pharmacy Practice News and
Oncology Special Edition and currently holds the title of
executive editor on the editorial board of Pharmacy Practice News.
In addition, Dr. Liter is on the Executive Committee for the
Division of Pharmacy Practice and Science, faculty secretary for the
College of Pharmacy, and holds a faculty associate appointment at the
Center for Health Services Management and Research at the University of
Kentucky.
