Despite Challenges, College

Prospers in 2002

LEXINGTON, KY (Dec. 10, 2002) -- As we approach the holiday season, we have much to be thankful for here in the UK College of Pharmacy. Our students again have proven themselves to be the best and brightest in the country.

Although rankings aren’t formally released, we have learned "unofficially" that our 2002 Pharm.D. graduates received the highest scores on the national board exam in comparison to all other pharmacy schools. This confirms our belief that the College has the best and brightest in the pharmacy profession. It also demonstrates that our students (90 percent are Kentucky residents) have the intellect to achieve at the highest level of performance in the nation and in the world and should never be underestimated in their academic ability.

UK graduate students also continue to display their excellence in academics and professional quality among their peers. We were notified earlier this year that five UK students received pre-doctoral fellowships from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education. Our graduate students at the UK College of Pharmacy consistently have competed admirably each year for these prestigious awards and continue to be recognized as future leaders in pharmaceutical sciences.

We also acknowledge our talented faculty and staff who have been honored for their achievements and success. Pat DeLuca recently was named the KPhA 2002 Pharmacist of the Year. Frank Romanelli was named Bluegrass Pharmacists Association’s 2002 Pharmacist of the Year. Joe Fink also received KPhA’s 2002 Distinguished Service Award. We congratulate Jeff Cain and Cynthia Mattingly, both recognized by the College as the 2002 Employees of the Year.

We are excited about good news recently received about funding for the College’s Center for Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (CPST). After more than a 10-year effort, University and state support has been secured to expand the CPST facility at the UK Coldstream Campus. An additional 20,000 square feet will be constructed and we look forward to sharing further information about the CPST expansion with you in the coming months.

The University also has recognized the College’s expertise and service capabilities in pharmacy clinical care with the budgeting and implementation of the REACH (Raising Energy and Awareness for Campus Health) Program. Under the direction of a team led by Dr. Margaret Nowak-Rapp, the program will assist patients enrolled in UK benefit plans with counseling and other services regarding their medications. The administrators of the Kentucky Clinic wish for this service to be extended beyond UK employees, retirees, and their families to private-pay patients and other users of the clinic and a fee structure is under development for implementation to compensate pharmacists for direct patient care.

We also want to commend and thank all of our alumni and friends who have stepped up and become Fellows this past year. We have increased the endowment to approximately $3 million – a fourfold increase in the first two years of Development Officer Caroline Barrow’s tenure with the College.

And although we have yet to realize our dream of a new building, our plans for expansion remain the top priority for the University and we will return to Frankfort in 2003 to again seek support from the state legislature.

We thank those who have called their legislators in the past and served as advocates for our program and encourage others to also help us in our goal to admit and graduate a larger number of pharmacists to practice in Kentucky. Your continuous support is requested.

It has been an exciting and challenging year and we remain thankful and proud of the many successes and achievements in 2002. We wish the best to all of our alumni and friends and look forward to a bright and prosperous 2003.

Happy Holidays,

Dean Kenneth B. Roberts
