Dr. Roberts received a B.S. in pharmacy and M.B.A. in marketing from the University of Tennessee. In 1975 he earned a Ph.D. in health care administration from the University of Mississippi. Prior to coming to Kentucky, he was dean of the School of Pharmacy, executive director of the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and professor of pharmacy administration at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Roberts' experience includes positions as director of the Center for Pharmacy Management and Research, professor and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, executive director of the American College of Apothecaries, executive director of the Missouri Foundation for Pharmaceutical Care, and assistant professor of pharmacy administration at the University of Texas College of Pharmacy. He has served with the American College of Apothecaries (ACA) Task Force on Third Party Programs, the National Association of Retail Druggists (NARD) Third Party Committee, St. Louis Pharmacist Association board of directors, the Great St. Louis Health Service Area Medicaid Task Force, Mississippi Pharmacists Association board of directors, and the Tennessee Hospital Association Pharmacy Manpower Task Force. Dr. Roberts has served on the editorial boards of the
Pharmacist Entrepreneur and Pharmacy Alumni Chronicle and as a reviewer
for The Apothecary, American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, Journal of Pharmaceutical Marketing and He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Lambda Sigma, Kappa Psi, Rho Chi, Sigma Xi and Pi Kappa Alpha. He was a Charles R. Walgreen Memorial Fellow of the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE). He is past grand regent of Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity and was a member of the board of directors and president of the West Tennessee Area Health Education Center. He also served as chair of the Council of Deans and member of the board of directors of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). Dr. Roberts was honored as the 1998 Outstanding Dean in Pharmacy Education by the American College of Apothecaries and as the recipient of the 1998 Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award from the Mississippi Society of Health System Pharmacists. During his administration as dean at Mississippi, the School of Pharmacy adopted entry-level and nontraditional doctor of pharmacy degree programs. The faculty adopted a student-centered, abilities-based curriculum and implemented problem-based learning for the entire fifth-professional-year curriculum. The school developed degree-based instruction and pharmacist continuing professional development for use on the Internet and other electronic media. The school enrolled more than 300,000 registrants in continuing professional education courses over the past six years, including almost 50 percent of the nation's pharmacists. The school constructed more than 125,000 square feet of new research, academic and patient care facilities, which include state-of-the-science research laboratories, electronic classrooms and a 10,000 square foot pharmaceutical care clinic and a student health center pharmacy. Research programs at the School of Pharmacy increased extramural funding by almost 500 percent, to more than $11.4 million in fiscal year 1999. The school has undertaken major initiatives to establish the National Center for Natural Products Research, the Center for Pharmaceutical Marketing and Management, and the Environmental and Community Health Research Program. The school raised more than $40 million in extramural support for facilities construction and renovations and for scientific equipment. The school endowment increased by more than 500 percent, to approximately $5.3 million. Dr. Roberts has
been an active member in AACP, as well as state and national
professional organizations. He participated in the inaugural AACP
Institute on Curriculum and Pedagogical Change and on various
association committees. He has served on the Walgreen Pharmacy Education
Advisory Council and as a member of the American Council on
Pharmaceutical Education accreditation evaluation teams. |
