LEXINGTON, KY (July 15, 2002) -- Patrick P. DeLuca, Ph.D., professor of pharmacy at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, has been named the 2002 Kentucky Pharmacist of the Year by the Kentucky Pharmacists Association.

Each year, the Kentucky Pharmacists Association (KPhA) recognizes a pharmacist for outstanding professional activities benefiting the profession. DeLuca was honored Saturday during the KPhA Annual Meeting in Fort Mitchell.

DeLuca, a recipient of the prestigious Sullivan Medallion in 2001, has served on the faculty at the UK College of Pharmacy since 1970.  He was associate dean from 1978 to 1987, division director from 1972 to 1984 and interim chair of the faculty of pharmaceutical sciences from 1998 to 2000.  He is an expert in novel drug delivery, formulation and process development of proteins and peptides and freeze-drying.

DeLuca is the author or co-author of more than 200 research and professional articles and book chapters.  He is a founding member and fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and received the first AAPS Research Achievement Award in Pharmaceutical Technology in 1998 and the first AAPS Outstanding Educator Award in 2000.

DeLuca was instrumental in establishing Faith Pharmacy in Lexington and continues to assist in the operation of the pharmacy and counsel patients.  The pharmacy provides a limited number of prescription medications to the needy without charge and helps patients to utilize patient assistance programs.

The Kentucky Pharmacists Association has approximately 1,700 members across the state involved in all facets of the pharmacy profession. Members include students, technicians, and pharmacists in all workplace and practice settings; academia, hospital, consultant, compounding, retail, chain, and independently owned pharmacies.
