Patrick DeLuca, Ph.D., professor of pharmaceutical sciences, was recipient of the University of Kentucky's 2001 Sullivan Award. The award - in the form of a medallion - and a citation were presented by UK President Charles T. Wethington Jr. during Commencement exercises May 6. President Wethington had this to say about Dr. DeLuca when he presented the award: "Patrick DeLuca has received many academic honors for his work in the field of pharmaceutical research. But it is his work in the field of life that has endeared him to people around the world. "On most Saturday mornings you won't find him at home in bed or taking the day off. You'll find him in |

downtown Lexington at the Faith Pharmacy - on the only day it is open - helping to provide free medications to people who cannot afford to pay for them. Dr. DeLuca, a faculty member in our College of Pharmacy, was instrumental in bringing the Faith Pharmacy to Lexington and works with great passion beside other pharmacists, faculty and students to make sure no one goes without medicines they desperately need. The true depth of his care and concern is revealed in the way he counsels patients and works with them to take advantage of programs that can provide their medicines on a long-term basis. "But Dr. DeLuca's compassion is not just for UK or Lexington. Last summer he traveled as part of a group to Ghana to help a small church. Before he left Lexington, he collected baseball equipment from local businesses. In Ghana, he used the equipment to start a baseball team for children. "He did not take his professional hat totally off while in Ghana, though. Residents there now receive help getting their medicines through their very own Faith Pharmacy. "It is because of these efforts and Dr. DeLuca's compassion that support for his Sullivan nomination came from all around the globe. "Dr. DeLuca is an inspiring and outstanding example of what the Sullivan Award stands for. It is with profound honor and great appreciation that I present Dr. Patrick DeLuca the 2001 Sullivan Award." |
