Pharmacy Student Receives National Leadership Award LEXINGTON, KY (Jan. 28, 2002) -- The American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA), the national professional society for pharmacists, has selected University of Kentucky student Debra J. Flores, a third-year student in the UK College of Pharmacy, as a recipient of the APhA Student Leadership Award for 2002.
Flores, daughter of Dr. George and Ursa Flores of Radcliff, is a 1993 graduate of North Hardin High School and received a B.A. in chemistry at Bellarmine University. Flores’ leadership efforts at UK include serving as the chair of the board of the Kentucky Alliance of Pharmacy Students (KAPS) and as APhA Midyear Regional Meeting Coordinator.
The APhA Student Leadership Award recognizes students entering their last year of pharmacy school who combine the best of academic achievements with leadership ability. The award, established through an endowment from Procter & Gamble Health Care, will be presented March 18, 2002, during the APhA-ASP Awards Ceremony at the annual meeting and exposition in Philadelphia. It is the first scholarship fund established for pharmacy students through the APhA Academy of Students of Pharmacy (APhA-ASP). APhA's Awards and Honors Program is American pharmacy's most comprehensive recognition program.
The American Pharmaceutical Association is the first established and largest professional association of pharmacists in the United States. APhA's 50,000 members include practicing pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and others interested in advancing the profession.
Other 2002 recipients are DeArcy E. Campbell, president of the APhA-ASP Chapter at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy in Gainesville; Amit B. Patel, president of the APhA-ASP Chapter at the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy in Ohio; and Scott R. Smorra, president of the APhA-ASP Chapter at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in Tucson.
