UK Pharmaceutical Science Graduate Students Receive AFPE Fellowships
LEXINGTON, KY -- (July 15, 2002)-- Five University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy graduate students have been selected to receive pre-doctoral fellowships by the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE).
The AFPE Pre-doctoral Fellowships in the Pharmaceutical Sciences were awarded to David Feola, third-year graduate student from Buckhannon, W.Va.; Laura Land, third-year graduate student from Fort Thomas, Ky.; and Santos Murty, fourth-year graduate student from Lexington. Two students received renewals for second year fellowships. They included Christina Charriez, fourth-year graduate student from West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Tyler DeGraw, fourth-year graduate student from Delta, Utah.
The AFPE Pre-doctoral Fellowships in Pharmaceutical Sciences are awarded to encourage outstanding pre-doctoral students, who have completed at least three semesters of graduate study and have no more than three years remaining to continue their studies and earn the Ph.D. in the pharmaceutical sciences. Students selected generally have majors in medicinal/pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacology/toxicology, pharmacy administration, pharmacognosy, pharmaco-kinetics/metabolism, and the pharmaceutical sciences.
“We are pleased the AFPE recognizes our students’ potential for positive impact on the pharmaceutical sciences,” said Robert Blouin, Pharm.D., associate dean for research and graduate studies.
“The fact that graduate students at the UK College of Pharmacy consistently have competed well each year for these prestigious awards shows that our students take their rightful place among the anticipated leaders in our field,” Blouin said. “ This is an important indicator of the academic and professional quality of our student population and their dedication to excellence at every level in their preparation for future contributions to the well-being of society.”
A maximum of 75 Fellowships, renewals and new awards, are awarded annually. Fellowship stipends can range from $6,000 to $10,000 annually and may be used for any purpose decided by the awardee and college that will enable the student to make progress in their pursuit of the Ph.D.
AFPE is the nation's oldest and largest pharmacy foundation and has as its sole purpose the funding of the best and brightest undergraduate, pre-doctoral, and pharmacy faculty pharmaceutical science researchers in preparation for distinguished careers in industry and teaching.
