Jan Pyrek,
Ph.D.
Born in Poland, Dr. Pyrek received a master of science degree in biochemistry from Warsaw University and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. He was a faculty member of Warsaw University from 1964-1967 and a research fellow, then research scientist, with the Polish Academy of Sciences from 1967-1972 and 1972-1978, respectively. Dr. Pyrek moved to the United States in the late 1970s and served as a faculty member of the University of Texas Medical School in Houston from 1979-1984 and as senior research scientist with Rice University in Houston from 1984-1989, when he joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. Dr. Pyrek's research involved several aspects of chemistry and biochemistry of natural products, with special attention to structural and metabolic studies of steroids and bile acids. In this area, main accomplishments included structure elucidation of plant sterols and terpenoids, acidic steroids produced during pregnancy, and identification of novel bile acids and their novel form of glucuronidation. This and related research were based on the utilization of modern mass spectral methods, NMR and chemical synthesis, including stable isotope labeling. Publications by Dr. Pyrek included "Fourier Transform-ion Cyclotron Resonance-Mass Spectrometer as a New Tool for Organic Chemists," SynLett, 248-266 (1999).
