Crime Prevention and Security Tips - CARJACKING

Carjacking is the armed theft of an automobile from the driver. It is often a violent crime. One or more robbers approach a driver who's either in his or her car or about to enter or leave it, point a gun or other weapon at the driver and force the driver to turn over the car. Many times the victim is robbed of other valuables, abducted and/or raped or assaulted. The motive for carjacking varies from motor vehicle theft to joyriding or using the vehicle to commit another crime.

Common Carjacking Schemes

  • Pretending to be a stranded motorist.
  • Faking a fender-bender accident or deliberately getting involved in an accident with the victim.
  • Approaching the vehicle while the victim is stopped in traffic.
  • Approaching a victim in shopping malls, private driveways, apartment complex parking lots, etc.

Rules to Drive By

  • There appears to be no pattern to carjacking. However, experts agree that women are more likely targets because thieves think women will put up less resistance than men. Those driving alone are the most likely victims. Carjackers sometimes approach a vehicle with small children in it. In most of those cases, the carjacker doesn't see the small children when they approach the vehicle.
  • Enter your vehicle quickly. Always have your keys ready to make a quick entry into your car. Before entering, make a quick visual sweep around the car, and checking the rear seat and floor. If safe to do so, enter the vehicle and lock the doors immediately. When exiting, look around before turning the ignition off.
  • Always keep your car doors locked and windows up.
  • Stay alert at red lights. Look around, especially to the sides and back so you can be aware of anyone approaching. When pulling up to a traffic light, leave enough room between your car and the car in front of you to drive off if someone does approach you.
  • Avoid driving late at night. Nationally, most carjackings take place between 10 PM and 2 AM.

If It Happens To You

  • Trust your instincts. If you think it is possible to accelerate and drive away, DO SO! Just remember, your car is not bullet proof. Your life is more important than a car.
  • If you feel it is in your best interest to comply, don't forget to get your children out of the car.
  • Report the crime immediately to the police.
