Theft

October 26, 2005

Recently the University of Kentucky Police Department has been investigating an increased number of thefts of wallets, purses, backpacks, and items from purses and backpacks such as cell phones.

These thefts have occurred at various locations on campus and have included offices, classrooms, locker rooms, athletic facilities, and patient treatment areas.

A possible suspect has been identified in several of these thefts. He is described as a black male, approximately 5'10, heavy build, late 30's to early 40's, with short grey and black hair, and wears large eye glasses with gold trim.

The University of Kentucky Police Department recommends the following precautions for protecting your property:

  • Never leave your belongings unattended and unsecured.
  • Maintain a record of your credit/debit card numbers and issuing bank/company phone numbers in a safe location.
  • Have a list of serial, make, and model numbers of all electronic items that you carry in your purse or bag.
  • Immediately report any thefts to the police.

Robbery

September 8, 2005

A male victim reported that at approximately 11:52 PM on September 7th he had been robbed at gunpoint while sitting in his vehicle in the Commonwealth Stadium Green Lot directly in front of Oswald Building. Victim advised that the suspect approached him and demanded his money, wallet, and car keys. The suspect then fled on foot toward Nutter Training Center and was seen entering a dark colored Volvo station wagon with a broken taillight.

Suspect is described as follows:

Suspect: Male, White, 5'10, black hair, last seen wearing black t-shirt, a black toboggan, and khaki pants.

Until the suspect is apprehended, take the following precautions to protect yourself:

  1. After dark, DO NOT travel alone. Use the campus bus service or the SGA Escort Service. Call the UK Police if these services are not available.
  2. Travel on well-lighted main thoroughfares with lots of pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic.
  3. Avoid carrying a purse, briefcase or any other article containing valuables.
  4. Don't display personal valuables, i.e., expensive watches, rings, earrings, necklaces, etc.
  5. Only carry a minimal amount of cash.
  6. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

If you are accosted, COMPLY with the demands of your assailant and report the incident immediately to UK Police by dialing 911.

Arson

April 29, 2005

Sometime between 7:00 PM on April 28 and 8:27 AM on April 29, a person or persons set fire to objects at the front door of an apartment at Greg Page apartments. UK Police are investigating this offense as Arson, 1St degree.

This is an extremely serious offense.

UKPD is asking for your assistance in locating the individual or individuals responsible for this fire. If you have any information that may assist in the investigation, please call UK Police, 257-1616.

Suspicious Fires

Kentucky Clinic Area

March 30, 2005

On March 29, 2005, between the hours of 5:55 P.M and 7:20 P.M., the University of Kentucky Police Department, UK Hospital & Medical Center Security, and the Lexington Fire Department responded to two incidents of suspicious fires within the Kentucky Clinic.

The first incident involved a trash can and the second involved a towel dispenser. Both incidents were minor in nature and the fire was contained to the described units.

UK Police offer the following safety precautions:

  • If you see anyone acting suspicious, go to the nearest phone and call 911 or use your cellular phone by dialing #UKPD (#8573).
  • If you smell smoke, call 911 immediately, and if possible attempt to locate the source.
  • If you locate a fire, immediately pull a fire alarm and then call 911. DO NOT attempt to fight the fire with fire extinguishers unless you are trained to do so!
  • Anytime the fire alarm system is activated, EVACUATE the facility.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and the primary and a secondary escape route should an actually fire occur.

Sexual Assault

February 9, 2005

On February 9, 2005 a female student reported to Lexington Police that she had been attacked and sexually assaulted while jogging. This attack occurred in a parking lot in the area of Stone Avenue between 7:00 and 7:30 A.M.

The unknown suspect is described as a white male in his mid-20's - 30's, 5'8, medium build, with brown hair, and a stubble beard. He was further described to have had bad dental hygiene and to have smelled of alcohol and cigarettes. He was wearing blue jeans and a sweat shirt.

UK Police offer the following safety precautions:

  • Do not exercise/jog alone; always walk/exercise in a heavily traveled area (pedestrian/vehicular) or with others.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and what other people around you are doing.
  • Have preplanned escape routes should something occur.
  • Carry a cell phone or other personal safety device.
  • If you see anyone acting suspicious, go to the nearest phone and call 911 or use your cellular phone by dialing #UKPD (#8573).
