Crime Prevention Overview

The UK Police Department's Community Affairs Unit is the driving force for coordinating the UK community crime prevention program. Through regularly scheduled seminars, presentations, and community meetings, combined with the deliberate and constant interaction of uniformed and plain clothes officers within the campus community, crime prevention efforts, under the concepts of "Community Policing," is stronger than ever. One of our most successful programs is the "Adopt-A-COPP" program. This program was planned, developed, undertaken, and is now continuously evaluated by the Crime Prevention Specialist Team. "Adopt-A-COPP" directly involves the entire UK residential community, along with an “adopted police officer” in an effort to thwart and effectively deter opportunistic crime in and around the UK campus and its buildings and property. Another positive and very popular program is STARR (Self-defense Tactics and Risk Reduction). The STARR program offers females an invaluable opportunity to learn through classroom lecture and hands-on activities techniques to prevent themselves from becoming a victim of both physical and sexual assaults. These programs are just a few of the many offerings that UKPD has for you to take advantage of to assist in maintaining a safe experience while you learn, live, and work at the University of Kentucky.
