The University of Kentucky Police Department is continually working to provide a safe and secure environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the campus. It is however important as citizens to take steps to decrease our risk of becoming victims. To further encourage women to take an active interest in their own safety we provide the S.T.A.R.R. program. The Self Defense Tactics and Risk Reduction course is designed for women over the age of 13 with no maximum age limit.
The program begins with a 3 hour discussion on ways to reduce your risk of being targeted and general safety tips. The remaining 9 hours is all active learning so get ready to break a sweat! We seek to empower women with the knowledge of how to defend against larger and often stronger attackers. Punching, kicking and ground defense techniques are all taught in a non-threatening atmosphere by instructors who have been trained and certified.
The class is taught in the basement of Blazer Hall on North Campus and is open to the public. There is no fee for the class but women under the age of 18 will be required to get parent or guardian approval. If you have any questions about the S.T.A.R.R. program you are encouraged to contact the coordinator, Cpl. Randall Webb at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 257-5770 ext. 470 and leaving a message.
*If these dates do not meet your needs, please contact Cpl. Randall Webb to possibly meet your availability. We can make special arrangements if you would like to schedule your own dates for a group of 8 or more women.
