Multidisciplinary connections are a key part of scientific activities at the UK. The units at the University of Kentucky collaborate with a wide range of institutions in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, other
states, Federal agencies, and municipalities. The most important mechanism for facilitating discussion and coordination, and efforts to promote multidisciplinary connections are the monthly GIS Seminar Series.
Presentations from faculty, staff, and graduate students at the University of Kentucky provide the framework for wide-ranging discussions on issues related to research, teaching, and application related use of GIS.
Seminar topics from this spring were:
• Estimation of Potential Direct Solar Radiation in Mountainous Terrain Using Digital Elevation Models
• GIS Resources Available over the WWW • Development Issues Surrounding a GIS for Animal Waste Management Policy • Using GPS for Input to GIS: Possibilities and Problems
These meetings are complemented by work on various GISci related committees which are developing grant applications to support enhanced research. For instance, the Transportation Systems Management Graduate
Certificate program has received USDOT support to provide aid to graduate students doing work on multi-disciplinary aspects of transportation planning. Through other user groups, people interested in GIS on
campus frequently find opportunity to interact with colleagues and discuss more applied developments that feed into research related activities. Preparing the UCGIS application has presented us with numerous
opportunities to enhance these activities and we intend to embark on new series of talks to continue building on this new momentum. |
