Academic Leadership Development Program- Application Materials
Description
The Southeast Conference Academic Consortium Leadership Development Program (SECAC ALDP) was established in 2007 to prepare current and potential university leaders to meet the challenges of the 21st century by:
- Enriching their knowledge and understanding of the major issues and challenges facing higher education
- Providing participants with an increased understanding of their strengths and talents as a leader in higher education
- Stimulating critical thought about the future of the academy in general, and ABOUT flagship universities in particular
- Building relationships within the University of Kentucky, among other potential academic leaders within the Southeast universities and with experienced leaders in higher education.
Program Goals
To identify, develop, prepare, and advance faculty as academic leaders in and for SEC universities.
- Advance faculty and teach leadership skills
- Provide qualified and skilled talent pool for deans, vice/associate provosts, provosts
Eligibility
- Tenured full-time faculty at the rank of Professor
- Demonstrated evidence of leadership
- Minimal 3 years experience in an administrative position at the rank of department chair/director or equivalent
- Have an understanding and appreciation of cultural, ethnic, and individual differences
Fellows will be faculty with potential for advancement to senior leadership positions such as associate dean, assistant dean, dean, assistant provost or associate provost, etc. During the year Fellows will participate in two SECAC workshops to further their academic career development. In addition, Fellows will participate in on-campus discussions about various leadership topics.
Selection Process
- Selection process established by each institution
- Selection criteria emphasizes
- Tenured faculty with demonstrated leadership ability
- Faculty with administrative assignments and positions, such as:
- Department chairs/associate chairs
- Associate and assistant deans
- Deans and associate/assistant provosts
- Potential for the individual to use the knowledge gained from the seminars and apply it to situations and positions that require leadership.
Expectation of the Fellows
Fellows are expected to be fully engaged in the ALDP programs and are expected to:
- Participate in all workshops
- Attend the entire workshop
- Travel with the group whenever possible
- Read the preparatory materials
- Engage in the discussion groups
- Participate in local program as defined by host institution
- Serve as mentors to future ALDP Fellows

Application Process
The application process for ALDP is designed to ensure that Fellows will fully participate in the program and benefit from it. A prospective faculty candidate must complete the application materials located at online as indicated below and submit a letter of evaluation from the Dean. The selection committee will identify no more than three Fellows from those who apply.
