Provost’s Outstanding Teachers Awards -Call for Nominations 2008-

Each year, we recognize faculty and graduate students for outstanding teaching. We strongly encourage you to nominate deserving faculty members and graduate teaching assistants for distinguished teaching awards. The award is intended to identify and recognize faculty and graduate teaching assistants who demonstrate special dedication to and demonstrable success in their teaching; and to encourage awareness of the importance of excellence in teaching.

A selection committee will review the nominees, collect additional information and recommend approximately six winners to the Provost. This year the committee will recommend recipients for each of three types of awards:

Guidelines for Submitting Nominations for the Provost Teaching Awards

The process involves the following steps; each described in detail below:

    Step 1: Initial Nomination
Faculty, staff, and students may initiate the nomination of individuals by sending a 1-page nomination letter to the candidate’s department chair.

The deadline for submitting the initial nomination letter to the faculty member’s department chair is Friday, February 15, 2008 4:00 PM.

    Step 2: Formal Recommendation
A department chair or senior faculty member, familiar with the candidate's teaching performance, will prepare a two-page formal recommendation. The formal recommendation will include specific examples of the accomplishments and qualities that make the nominee a model of teaching excellence.

The chair will submit three (3) copies of the initial nomination letter and the formal recommendation to the Office of the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs. The deadline for chairs to submit these materials is 4:00 p.m. Monday, February 25th, 2008.

If you have any questions, please contact Rita Wilkie, Institutional Staff Officer at rwilkie@email.uky.edu, or phone 323-6589.

    Step 3: Selection of finalists
The Selection Committee will review all initial nominations and select approximately six finalists in each category.

    Step 4: Submission of Dossiers
Each finalist and their department chair (or designee) will be asked to prepare a dossier or portfolio containing evidence of the candidate's competence as an aspiring and capable teacher; evidence of influence upon the learning and progress of students (outcomes); and up to five letters of recommendation (excluding the initial letter from the chair) from colleagues, students, or others familiar with the candidate's teaching performance.

    Step 5: Recommendation to Provost
Upon review of the dossiers, the Selection Committee will recommend the recipients to the Provost.
