ABOUT OUR LAB STAFF

Stefan Bauschard

Stefan brings more than fifteen years of workshop and coaching experience to the lab. Currently Stefan is a debate coach for Harvard Debate and the Director of Debate for Lakeland Public Schools. He has previously coached at Boston College, Cathedral Prep, and the St. Mark's School of Texas.

He has coached teams to the late elimination rounds of all major national invitational tournaments, including Emory, Harvard, The Glenbrooks, Greenhill, Bronx, the NDCA Championships, and MBA. After just two years at Lakeland, he coached the team to its first TOC appearance in more than eight years and the district's first-ever quarterfinals appearance at Harvard.

Stefan is also the President and Co-Founder of Planet Debate, the leading online portal for debate-related research and instructional materials. Stefan has produced and edited hundreds of debate handbooks and has extensive experience with, and knowledge of, arguments that will dominate the season.

He is dedicated to helping individuals become better debaters and in assisting them with their tournament argument preparations.

Brian Manuel

Brian has been coaching debate for nine years. His extraordinary abilities have enabled him to create and rebuild programs from the bottom up. Brian is currently coaching both at Chattahoochee High School in Atlanta, Georgia and for Harvard Debate in Cambridge, Ma. Before this year Brian has coached at both Scranton High School (2001-2004) and the Cathedral Preparatory School (2004-2008). Brian literally built the program at Scranton from scratch and within four years qualified a team to the Tournament of Champions.

Brian's Cathedral Prep teams have participated in elimination rounds of every major national tournament, including the Tournament of Champions, and have had final round appearances at Wake Forest, Bronx Science, The University of Michigan, and the 2007 National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament. He has coached the champions of the 2003 Bronx Science tournament and the 2008 Barkley Forum tournament held at Emory University.

This past year he was the recipient of the Lexington Coaching Award given to a coach for unwavering dedication to the activity. Over the past summer he taught at both the Kentucky National Debate Institute with the Fellows program and at the Stanford National Forensics Institute/Extended Week program.

He is one of the most highly recruited debate coaches in America.

Synergy

Brian and Stefan bring a combined total of 25 years of successful coaching in both high school and college debate. Together they have successfully worked with all debaters, including the least experienced novices and the most competitive high school and college champions.

Brian and Stefan also have experience working together. During the 2007-2008 season they combined their coaching talents to create an online environment that permitted the sharing of coaching, research, and instructional resources of their top teams in order to maximize their success. These efforts contributed to competitive success of their teams throughout the 2007-2008 season, and it is the success of this model that they wish to share with you during the summer of 2009.

GRADE ELIGIBILITY FOR INSTITUTE

Institute participants must be in high school grades nine through twelve during the 2008-2009 school year. Exceptions may be granted by the Director.

LODGING

All student dorms are double occupancy and students are responsible for BRINGING THEIR OWN LINENS (sheets, blankets, pillows, pillowcases, towels, etc.). The beds are extra long twin size (36x80). You are also encouraged to bring a small reading lamp. The Institute will attempt to honor mutual roommate requests. The dorms are fully equipped with air conditioning, vending machines, and laundry facilities. Each floor has a lounge and shower facilities. Students are carefully supervised by a designated Institute dormitory staff and by their daytime instructors. Roll-calls, room-checks, and lights-out are part of our regular monitoring procedures. Students may not leave the campus during the Institute except for designated restaurants and stores adjacent to campus and with Institute staff for official Institute events. As an official UK program, the Institute has close ties to the UK Police and the nationally respected University of Kentucky Hospital system, located one short block from our dorms.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Morning assemblies with roll call, as well as nightly building check-in and room checks, are part of a daily routine. Adult staff and faculty of the institute reside in the dorms to maintain supervision. Students will not be permitted to leave the campus except to designated stores and fast food restaurants adjacent to the campus, unless escorted by their parents or by the Institute Staff for Institute sponsored functions.

COSTS NOT INCLUDED IN TUITION AND FOOD

Depending upon the individual spending habits, many students will also need additional money for snacks, laundry, optional (excessive) photocopying, and other incidentals.

TRAVEL TO CAMPUS

For a $25 fee, Institute shuttles will run between both the airport and bus station for participants' arrival and departure. If you attend, more information will be sent to you later on how this system will operate. Taxis are available, of course, if you prefer, but this mode is more expensive.

ADDITIONAL HOUSING INFORMATION

CHECK-IN: Participants may check into University Housing anytime on Sunday, June 21, 2009, between 1:00 p.m. and midnight. More specifics will be sent in your acceptance letter. Participants are allowed to check in a day late or a day early if absolutely necessary, provided you make special arrangements with us. Additional nights will require additional housing fees and might necessitate changing dormitories for the additional nights.

CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE-POLICY ONLY:

Participants may check out on Saturday, July 11. Participants must check out of the dorm by 4:00 p.m.
