2009 LINCOLN-DOUGLAS STAFF

Roger Solt (Institute Director) – is Co-Director of Debate at the University of Kentucky. His students have finished both first and second at the National Debate Tournament, and have been won the first place speaker award at the NDT on five occasions. He has taught at numerous debate institutes, including for many summers the seven week lab at the University of Michigan. He is also widely published in debate theory, having authored articles on topicality and counterplan theory as well as writing extensively about critical argument.

Jon Cruz – is Director of Forensics and Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the Bronx High School of Science. This season, alone he coached the Lincoln-Douglas champions of the Harvard National Invitational, the Malcolm A. Bump Memorial Tournament at Hendrick Hudson High School, Wake Forest National Earlybird, the Ridge Debates, the Scarsdale Invitational, and the Westchester Classic at Lakeland High School, in addition to the J.V. champion at the Glenbrooks. He also had finalists at this year's Woodward National Championships and Liberty Bell Classic at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his top-notch coaching, Jon has worked closely with Victory Briefs, including having edited the Victory Briefs Daily and serving as Student Life Director at the VBI. He sits on the TOC Advisory Committee and has served on the LD Rules and Recommendations Committee of the NFL. This year, he became the youngest person in history to be named a Key Coach of the Barkley Forum for High Schools at Emory University.

Al Hiland - debated for Iowa City West High School for four years and cleared to outrounds at national level tournaments such as Harvard and Omaha Westside. He was also a two-time national qualifier and cleared to eliminations at State five times finishing as a semifinalist his senior year. He currently coaches for Waterloo East High School and helped them to clear a debater at state for the first time in recent memory. He also debates varsity for the University of Northern Iowa policy team and specializes in "Kritik"-type argumentation.

Cyndy Woodhouse – is Director of Debate at West High School in Iowa City and a veteran of the KNDI. As a coach and instructor, she is an uncompromising defender of the better angels of our debate practice. The KNDI congratulates Cyndy on receiving the 2008 Iowa Communication Association Outstanding New Teacher Award.

Seth Teleky - is a graduating senior at the Bronx High School of Science, where he is Lincoln-Douglas debate captain. This season, Seth won the Westchester Classic at Lakeland High School and debated in the final round of the Liberty Bell Classic at the University of Pennsylvania. As one of the most competitively successful debaters in the Northeast, Seth has reached late elimination rounds at a variety of tournaments, including the Yale Invitational, the Columbia Invitational, and the Kaiser at Monticello High School. He has also had success outside of his region, debating in the outrounds at the Blake School's Edie Holiday Tournament, the Glenbrooks, and the Grapevine Classic.

Katie Monson – is a graduating senior at Iowa City West High School and the reigning Iowa State Champion. In addition to winning the Iowa State Tournament, Katie was top speaker and had previously reached the semifinals at the tournament as a sophomore. (She was also runner-up at the IHSSA State Tournament in 2008 and a semifinalist there in 2007.) She debated late elimination rounds at the Dowling Catholic Paradigm. In addition to her success in Lincoln-Douglas debate, Katie has served for two years as captain of the U.S. National Debate Team, competing in parliamentary debate.

Douglas Jeffers – is assistant coach at the Bronx High School of Science and was the 2006 National Champion. One of the most successful Lincoln-Douglas debaters of the twenty-first century, Doug won the Barkley Forum for High Schools at Emory University, the Lexington Winter Invitational, and the Florida Blue Key, and was the first person ever to win both the New York City Invitational at Bronx Science and the Bronx Round Robin. He was a finalist at the NCFL and top speaker at TFA State as a junior and, as a senior, was the top speaker at the Greenhill Fall Classic. Just prior to winning NFL Nationals, Doug reached the semfinal round of the TOC.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

"Lincoln-Douglas" applications are due no later than Monday, June 1, 2009. The application must be accompanied by a $100 deposit. We limit our enrollment to sixty (60). The remainder of the cost is due June 12. Please make checks payable to "Kentucky Debate Institute." If positions are still available, applications will be accepted after May 31. A full refund of the tuition fee will be made if the request is postmarked on or before June 1, 2009. After that date, no refunds will be made. GRADE ELIGIBILITY FOR INSTITUTE

Institute participants must be in high school grades nine through twelve during the 2008-2009 school year. Exceptions may be granted by the Director.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We have a limited number of partial scholarships which will be awarded to students with exceptional ability but who cannot attend without financial assistance. students applying for financial aid should have applications in by Friday, May 1, 2009, with a $200 deposit. WE CANNOT CONSIDER YOUR REQUEST UNLESS IT IS ACCOMPANIED BY A $200 DEPOSIT. Please make checks payable to "Kentucky Debate Institute." If you are denied a scholarship and do not choose to attend the Institute, your $200 will be refunded if a refund is requested by June 1.

LODGING

All student dorms are double occupancy and students are responsible for BRINGING THEIR OWN LINENS (sheets, blankets, pillows, pillowcases, towels, etc.). The beds are extra long twin size (36x80). You are also encouraged to bring a small reading lamp. The Institute will attempt to honor mutual roommate requests. The dorms are fully equipped with air conditioning, vending machines, and laundry facilities. Each floor has a lounge and shower facilities. Students are carefully supervised by designated Institute dormitory staff and by their daytime instructors. Roll-calls, room-checks, and lights-out are part of our regular monitoring procedures. Students may not leave the campus during the Institute except for designated restaurants and stores adjacent to campus and with Institute staff for official Institute events. As an official UK program, the Institute has close ties to the UK Police and the nationally respected University of Kentucky Hospital system, located one short block from our dorms.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Morning assemblies with roll call, as well as nightly building check-in and room checks, are part of a daily routine. Adult staff and faculty of the institute reside in the dorms to maintain supervision. Students will not be permitted to leave the campus except to designated stores and fast food restaurants adjacent to the campus, unless escorted by their parents or by the Institute Staff for Institute sponsored functions.

COSTS NOT INCLUDED IN TUITION AND FOOD

Depending upon individual spending habits, many students will also need additional money for snacks, laundry, optional (excessive) photocopying, and other incidentals.

TRAVEL TO CAMPUS

For a $25 fee, Institute shuttles will run between both the airport and bus station for participants' arrival and departure. If you attend, more information will be sent to you later on how this system will operate. Taxis are available, of course, if you prefer, but this mode is more expensive.

ADDITIONAL HOUSING INFORMATION

CHECK-IN PROCEDURE: Three-Week and One-Week participants for "LD" may check into University Housing any time on Sunday, June 21, 2009, between 1:00 p.m. and midnight. More specifics will be sent in your acceptance letter. Two-Week participants may check into University Housing any time on Saturday, June 27, 2009, between 1:00 p.m. and midnight.

CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE: "LD" Three-Week and Two-Week participants may check out on Saturday, July 11. One-Week participants may check out on Saturday, June 27. Participants must check out of the dorm by 4:00 p.m.

ANSWERS TO OFTEN ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Can I attend both the NFL and the Kentucky Institute? Yes if you are coming in policy, but you must make special arrangements in advance.
  2. When will I learn whether I have been admitted? As soon as we can process your application. This usually takes about ten days.
  3. If I apply for a scholarship, when will I know if I got it? As soon after May 1st as possible, assuming all of the material, including the tuition deposit, has arrived.
  4. Are participants permitted to leave campus? No, except with parents or for Institute sponsored events accompanied by Staff, and to designated stores and fast food restaurants adjacent to the campus.
  5. May I choose my own roommate? Yes, if we have a written request from both parties.
  6. Are check cashing facilities available? No, except for Travelers Checks. ATM machines are available on campus.
  7. Are refrigerators in the rooms? No, we cannot arrange for this.
  8. Are laundry facilities available? Yes, there are machines in the basement of the dormitory.
  9. IS PHOTOCOPYING INCLUDED IN TUITION? Yes.
  10. When does University meal service begin? With the dinner meal for Three-Week participants on Sunday, June 21; service ends on Friday, July 10. For Two-Week participants with the dinner meal on Saturday, June 27; it ends on Friday, July 10. For One-Week participants with the dinner meal on Sunday, June 21 and ends on Friday, June 26th.

MAILING TO PARENTS

Once you are accepted, you will receive a package of information which includes forms that your parents or guardians must sign, including: Permission for Medical treatment, a Contractual Agreement signed by you and your parents in which you agree to abide by the rules and regulations of the Institute, and information on how to reach you in case of an emergency.
