IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR 2007

  1. PLEASE NOTE: PUBLIC FORUM IS OFFERED THIS YEAR
  2. The tournament hotel is the "Radisson Plaza Hotel" located downtown at 369 West Vine Street (Broadway and Vine), with a flat rate of $75 for 1-4 people. Ask for Reservations, then mention UK Debate. After 5:00 p.m. 1-800-333-3333. The Radisson is holding the rooms until November 9th.
  3. The tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
  4. Registration will be on Friday evening, November 30th, in the Presidential Suite of the Radisson Plaza Hotel from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Please make every effort to register on Friday evening. DIRE EMERGENICES ONLY ON SATURDAY, GREAT HALL OF THE STUDENT CENTER AT 8:00 A.M. A LATE REGISTRATION FEE OF $50 WILL BE ASSESSED AFTER 11:00 P.M. ON FRIDAY.
  5. Reception for visiting coaches and judges will be held in the Presidential Suite of the Radisson Plaza Hotel on Friday from 6:00 to 12:00 midnight; and on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 12:00 midnight.

Dear Colleague:
The University of Kentucky Student Forum cordially invites you to the Ohio Valley Invitational to be held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 2007. The tournament will be limited to six divisions of debate and is open to any high school in the country.

TOC Qualifier: The tournament is a TOC qualifier in two-person policy at the quarter-finals level, Lincoln-Douglas at the semi-finals level and Public Forum at the quarter-finals level.

Debate Divisions: The tournament will include five divisions in debate:

  1. Varsity Policy Debate
  2. Junior Varsity Policy Debate
  3. Novice Policy Debate
  4. Lincoln-Douglas Novice Debate
  5. Lincoln-Douglas Varsity Debate
  6. Public Forum

Judges:

If you provide the judge, one person can cover two teams in policy, one person can cover two teams in Public Forum or one person can cover three Lincoln-Douglas debaters.

Hired Judges:

A limited number of judges are available for hire.

Hired policy debate judges are $120 per team; $100 in L-D. Please Note: A hired judge cannot cover two teams since we have to be concerned about the cost of housing, transportation, etc. for hired judges.

A hired judge can cover two Lincoln-Douglas debaters for $100.

Please notify us of your request for hired judges as early as possible. THERE WILL NOT BE ANY JUDGES FOR HIRE THE DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT.

Schedule

Debating will begin at 8:30 on Saturday morning. The final schedule will be distributed at registration. We will adhere to the following:

1. Varsity Debate: Varsity Debate will be held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. We will have six preliminary rounds in this division. We will have either octas or double octas on Sunday if the number of entries warrants. Elimination rounds in varsity debate will conclude on Monday.

2. JV and Novice Policy, and Novice and Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Five preliminary rounds breaking to octas if the number of entries warrants. WE WILL MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO COMPLETE THESE DIVISIONS ON SUNDAY, BUT WE CAN'T GUARANTEE.

Entry Deadlines: Entries “must” be in Lexington by Monday, November 26th. No refunds will be made after that date. All fees “must” be paid by Monday, November 26th. Please make all checks to “UK Student Forum.”

Registration: Registration will take place on Friday evening, December 1st, Presidential Suite of the Radisson Plaza Hotel from 6:30 p.m. until 11:00. Please make every effort to register on Friday evening. DIRE EMERGENCIES ONLY ON SATURDAY, GREAT HALL OF THE STUDENT CENTER AT 8:00 A.M. A LATE REGISTRATION FEE OF $50 WILL BE ASSESSED AFTER 11:00 P.M. ON FRIDAY.

Entries: We are placing no limit on the number of entries. If it later becomes necessary to limit entries, early registrants will receive preference. If we run out of rooms, we will have to turn down entries, thus it's to your advantage to register early. Debaters must enter either two-person or Lincoln-Douglas. You have the following options for entry:

1. You may enter by U.S. Mail, but remember your entry must be in Lexington, not postmarked, by Monday, November 26th. Please mail your entries to:

2. You may enter by phone between 9:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday by calling 859-257-6523. DO NOT PHONE IN AN ENTRY ON THANKSGIVING DAY OR THE FRIDAY AFTER THANKSGIVING. NO ONE WILL BE IN THE OFFICE TO TAKE YOUR ENTRY.

3. YOU MAY FAX YOUR ENTRY TO LINDA BARKER AT 859-323-1995.

4. YOU MAY E-MAIL YOUR ENTRY THROUGH MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH, TO LINDA BARKER at linda.barker@uky.edu; or J.W. PATTERSON at jwpatt00@uky.edu.

Entry Fees: The registration fee for two-person will be $80 per team in all three divisions of two-person policy and Public Forum. The registration fee for Lincoln-Douglas will be $60 per entry. All fees must be paid by Monday, November 26th. Please make all checks payable to UK Student Forum. PLEASE, DO NOT TELL US YOU WILL MAIL THE CHECK LATER. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.

We cannot provide refunds after Monday, November 26th If you drop entries after that date, you must still pay the entry fees.

Location: All debates will be held on the University of Kentucky campus except some elimination rounds and varsity policy which will be held at the Radisson Plaza Hotel.

Topics: The national topics will be used for policy, Lincoln-Douglas debates and Public Forum.

Awards: Championship awards will be given to teams in all divisions as well as to the top speakers in policy debate.
