Organization
The Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence includes several interrelated elements:
- An endowed Chair and several endowed Professorships that support outstanding faculty members who engage in research, development, and dissemination of innovative undergraduate education
- Intentional collaboration among prestigious undergraduate programs such as the Discovery Seminar Program, Education Abroad, eUreKa!, the Honors Program, Intercollegiate Debate, Living-Learning Communities, and the Office of External Scholarships
- A number of undergraduate Fellows who are mentored by and participate in the activities of the faculty and programs associated with the Center
The day-to-day administration of the Chellgren Center is the responsibility of its Coordinator, who reports to the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education.
The undergraduate programs, centers, and offices that collaborate with the Chellgren Center are administered by their individual directors, who report to various administrative units throughout the University. These programs are affiliated with the Chellgren Center, which serves as a cooperative designed to advance the quality of undergraduate education at UK. Think of the Chellgren Center as an incubator for good ideas and practices in undergraduate education, especially those that have the potential to enhance faculty instruction and student learning.
Paul W. Chellgren
The benefactors of the Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence are Paul W. Chellgren and his family. A UK graduate, Mr. Chellgren was an Honors Program student, a star intercollegiate debater, and President of the Student Body his senior year. He subsequently earned a Harvard MBA and a D.D.E. from Oxford University, where he has been named an Honorary Fellow. In addition to a celebrated career in business, one that included service as the CEO of Ashland Inc., Mr. Chellgren has been a very active UK alumnus, having served for eleven years on the UK Board of Trustees. With the generous gift from Mr. Chellgren and his family, the University of Kentucky established the Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence.
