How to Withdraw

All students, including degree seeking, non-degree seeking, and visiting students, who wish to leave the university during a term (Fall, Spring or Summer) must formally withdraw. Students leaving the institution without officially withdrawing may receive failing grades in all courses in which enrolled and endanger their future status in the institution. Students enrolled in only one course but wish to drop the course, must withdraw. Refer to the University's Official Academic Calendar published in the University Bulletin for withdrawal and fee liability dates. Please note the University's Fee Liability Policy dates are different than the withdrawal dates.

Withdrawing from Courses

During the withdrawal period, as designated in the official University calendar, students receive a W grade for dropped courses. Follow the same procedure on myUK for dropping a course.

NOTE: To withdraw from all your courses (withdraw from UK) on or after the first day of class, contact the Student Records Office, 10 Funkhouser, (859) 257-8729. More detailed information about how to withdraw:

  1. Withdraw by fax
There are circumstances in which a student cannot physically appear to withdraw. For these cases, the Registrar's Office will accept a faxed request for withdrawal. The date of the fax will serve as the official date of the withdrawal for fee liability purposes (refer to Academic Calendar). The fax number is (859) 257-7160. The information needed for the request is:
    Full name
    Student Number
    List of courses
    Term
    Date
    Signature
    Email
  2. Withdraw by mail
You may mail a written request for withdrawal to the Registrar's Office. The address is:
    Student Records
    Room 10, Funkhouser Building
    University of Kentucky
    Lexington, KY 40506-0054

The postmark will serve as the official date of the withdrawal for fee liability purposes (refer to Academic Calendar). The required information for withdrawal by mail is identical to that of the fax request in Step 2 above.

Note: After the last official day to withdraw from a term as published in the Academic Calendar, the student must start the withdrawal process beginning with the dean of their college. (Senate Rule, V.1.8.3). A student should contact his/her college's student services office for more details concerning this process.
