B.A. or B.S. with a major in Russian and East European Studies

The Department of Russian and Eastern Studies offers language courses in Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, and Hebrew, as well as related literature and culture courses.

Russian and East European Studies

The Department of Russian and Eastern Studies offers an undergraduate major in Russian and East European Studies. The program is designed to produce an integrated knowledge of Russian language, literature, culture, history, politics, and society. This interdisciplinary major provides the broadest possible base for further study of the former Soviet Union and East Europe.

In addition to satisfying University Studies requirements and the College requirements, each student completes the following:

Major Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 42 credit hours at the 200 level or above, with at least 24 hours at the 300 level or above, distributed as follows.

Two semesters of another language of the former U.S.S.R. or Eastern Europe may be substituted for the third-year Russian requirement with the approval of the RAE advisor.

In addition, students must complete at least 13 elective credits at or above the 200 level from Russian Area courses selected with the approval of the RAE advisor. At least 14 of the total credit hours must be taken in other departments.


Minor in Russian

The minor in Russian requires 18 hours of course work beyond second-year proficiency in Russian language (RAE 202) distributed as follows:

and 12 hours of additional course work in designated Russian area studies courses, of which at least 9 hours must be in RAE courses.

Note: RAE 395, Independent Work in Russian, may not be used for the minor.
