Commonly Used Campus Terms
- Academic advisor
- faculty or staff member in an academic field who assists students with course scheduling, serves as a resource for academic and nonacademic services, and offers counseling. Advisor Contact list (see also Academic Advising section of the UK Bulletin / Course Catalog)
- Add/drop
- the period of time when students may adjust their course schedule - add or drop courses. To drop all your courses, see "Cancel Registration" below. Add/Drop Dates.
- Advisor hold
- a hold that is placed on undergraduate students (excluding nondegree seeking students) and some graduate students. Students must meet with an advisor to have the hold released prior to registration.
- Call number
- a five-digit number printed in the Schedule of Classes used to identify classes using myUK.
- Cancel Registration
- when a student decides not to attend UK after scheduling for classes. Schedules must be cancelled prior to the first day of classes.
- Central campus
- the area of campus that includes the majority of colleges, classrooms, and Donovan and Haggin residence halls.
- Classification
- the designation of freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student.
- Classroom Building
- Whitehall Classroom Building, located next to Patterson Office Tower.
- College
- a major division of the University (e.g., College of Arts and Sciences). Colleges are often further subdivided into departments. UK Colleges...
- Commons
- the facility that houses a cafeteria, grill, computer lab, and study areas. It is located in the Kirwin-Blanding Residence Hall Complex.
- Complex
- the Kirwin-Blanding Residence Hall Complex.
- Controlled enrollment
- a type of restriction on a course that requires approval of the department offering the class. Students who wish to enroll in a course with controlled enrollment must obtain electronic permission from the offering department.
- Credit hour
- the credit value assigned to a course.
- Full-time
- full-time status for undergraduate students in a regular semester is 12 hours or more. Graduate students attain full-time status at 9 hours or more.
- Major
- a student's field of study (e.g. English, biology, accounting). Major Sheets.
- Minor
- a student's secondary field of study.
- myUK
- myUK, web-based student information system which allows students to access their University of Kentucky records via the internet. Web registration is one of the features of myUK at: myuk.uky.edu.
- North campus
- the area of campus that includes the Student Center, College of Education , and North Campus Residence Halls (Jewel, Patterson, Boyd, Holmes, Blazer, and Keeneland).
- Override
- electronic or written permission allowing entry into a closed or restricted class.
- Part-time
- undergraduate students with less than 12 hours in a regular semester or graduate students with less than 9 hours in a regular semester.
- P.O.T
- Patterson Office Tower, located beside the Whitehall Classroom Building.
- Priority registration
- the time period for continuing students to register for the upcoming semester. Priority registration occurs every November and April. Priority Registration Dates.
- Registrar's Office
- the office that maintains student's official academic records, including courses, grades, and grade-point average (GPA). The Registrar's Office also directs the registration process.
- Schedule of Classes
- a book that contains class listings, meeting patterns, call numbers, and exam schedules. Schedule books may be obtained from your college deans office, the Registrar's Office, or viewed on the Web at: myUK. - South campus
- the area of campus that includes the Kirwin-Blanding Complex, Seaton Center, Aquatic Center, the Medical Center Complex, and the College of Agriculture.
- Staff
- the term used in the Schedule of Classes to indicate that an instructor had not been assigned at the time of printing.
- Stop
- a stop indicates a student owes money or must complete a process with a particular office prior to registration or add/drop activity. Stops may be placed by various units on campus such as Parking Office, Student Billings, and the library.
- Syllabus
- a written description of a course, assignments, grading policy, exams, etc., given to a class by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
- UKID
- University of Kentucky student identification card. UKID web site.
- Withdraw
- a) to drop all classes on or after the first day of classes (withdraw completely from the University); b) to drop a class with a grade of W. Occurs automatically if you drop a course after a specified date. Withdrawing from courses.
