NCAA Continuing Eligibility (Student-Athletes)

students

Student-athletes must meet all NCAA general continuing eligibility requirements, in addition to academic requirements, to be eligible for intercollegiate competition. A representative of the Office of the University Registrar determines this continuing eligibility by certifying the following NCAA rules are met by each student-athlete.

A student-athlete must meet the following requirements in addition to other University academic requirements:

  • full-time status: be enrolled in at least 12 semester hours that count toward your degree program each academic term.
  • 24 hour rule: successfully complete (pass) 24 hours of courses that count toward your degree program each academic year.
  • 75 percent rule: earn at least 75 percent (18 hours) of 24 hours of courses that count toward your degree program during the fall and spring terms (summer hours not included).
  • Designation of degree: designate a program of study (major) leading toward a specific baccalaureate degree by the beginning of the third year of enrollment (fifth semester).
  • 25 percent rule: successfully complete 25 percent of course requirements before entering his/her third year of collegiate enrollment (for example: 30 hours of 120 hour program).
  • 50 percent rule: successfully complete 50 percent of course requirements before entering his/her fourth year of collegiate enrollment (for example: 60 hours of 120 hours program).
  • 75 percent rule: successfully complete 75 percent of course requirements before entering his/her fifth year of collegiate enrollment (for example: 90 hours of 120 hour program).
  • 90 percent rule: upon entering his/her third year of collegiate enrollment shall present a cumulative minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) that equals at least 90 percent (1.8000) of the institution's required GPA.
  • 95 percent rule: upon entering his/her fourth year of collegiate enrollment shall present a cumulative minimum GPA that equals at least 95 percent (1.9000) of the institution's required GPA.

Transfer Student-Athletes

Student-athletes transferring from one institution to another must meet a specific set of NCAA rules, and the NCAA has final approval for exceptions or waivers of these rules.
