Bachas-Daunert Receives AIChE Poster Award

(Nov. 2007) - Philip Bachas-Daunert, a junior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington, KY, received a special award and third prize at the undergraduate poster competition at the National Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in Salt Lake City, UT, on November 4, 2007. Bachas-Daunert's poster was entitled "Highly Stable Thermophilic Dehalogenase from Sulfolobus tokadaii for Dechlorination of Organic Pollutants" and was co-authored by Stacy Law, Yinan Wei, and Leonidas Bachas.

Bachas-Daunert worked during the summer of 2007 with Yinan Wei on the project, which dealt with the characterization of a putative thermophilic dehalogenase that is capable of dechlorinating organic pollutants at elevated temperatures.

Bachas-Daunert is the son of UK-SRP research scientists and University of Kentucky faculty members Dr. Sylvia Daunert and Dr. Leonidas Bachas.
