Dr. Hennig Receives College of Agriculture's Bobby Pass Award

(Nov. 2007) - UK-SRP Program Director Bernhard Hennig has received the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture's Bobby Pass Excellence in Grantsmanship Award. The award was presented at the annual Celebration of Land Grant Research event in November. Dr. Hennig's research focuses on the utilization of tissue culture model systems in the study of nutrition and atherosclerosis, with emphasis in the role of nutrients on biomedical and molecular mechanisms of vascular endothelial cell function, injury and protection. His research has involved the injurious effects of individual fats (e.g., fatty acids, cholesterol and their oxidation derivatives) on vascular endothelial cells and protection against such injury by certain vitamins and minerals (e.g., vitamin E and zinc).

In addition to his role as UK-SRP Program Director and core leader of the Administrative Core, Dr. Hennig is the primary investigator for Project 1: Superfund Chemicals, Nutrition, and Endothelial Cell Dysfunction.

The Pass Award is named in memory of Dr. Bobby Pass and recognizes individuals within the university who promote scientific excellence through successful grantsmanship efforts. Dr. Pass was chair of the university's Department of Entomology from 1968-2001.
