Dr. Daunert Receives Barfield Award for Research

(Mar. 2009) - The Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute (KWRRI) has presented the 2009 Bill Barfield Award for Outstanding Contributions to Water Resources Research to Dr. Sylvia Daunert, primary investigator for UK-SRP's Whole-Cell Sensing project.

Dr. Daunert is a professor of chemistry in the UK College of Arts and Sciences Department of Chemistry, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences in the UK College of Pharmacy, and a faculty member with the UK Center of Membrane Sciences. Her research focuses on using recombinant DNA technology to develop new bioanalytical techniques, including whole-cell sensing of Superfund chemicals. A Fulbright Scholar (1983-85), Daunert has received the National Science Foundation-CAREER Award, the Juan Abello Pascual Award in Biochemistry from the Spanish Royal Academy of Doctors, the NSF Special Creativity Award, the Lilly Award in Analytical Chemistry, the A. F. Findeis Award from the American Chemical Society, the Van Slyke Society Research Award, and the Cottrell Scholar Award. She received her doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Barcelona, Spain; a master's degree in medicinal chemistry from the University of Michigan; and a doctorate in bioanalytical chemistry from the University of Barcelona.

Named for a former KWRRI executive director, the Barfield Award honors the Commonwealth's foremost researchers in water-related fields. The award ceremony took place at the Annual KWRRI Symposium in Lexington, Kentucky

KWRRI is one of 54 institutes established under the Water Research Act of 1964 and charged with stimulating, sponsoring, providing for, and supplementing programs for the conduct of research, investigations, experiments, and scientific training related to water and to resources that affect water.
