UK-SRP Graduate Students and Alumni Highlighted in Two Seminar Series

(Spring 2011) - Current UK-SRP graduate students and recent UK-SRP alumni have recently been highlighted in two seminar series. Doctoral students and research assistants from the Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences have been featured in the campus-wide GCNS Seminar Series, while recent program alumni have presented for state government personnel in the Research Translation Seminar Series jointly sponsored by UK-SRP and the Division of Waste Management in the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection.

The GCNS Seminar Series has featured speakers from two different UK-SRP biomedical project and one core. On February 23rd, Nicki Baker, of Dr. Lisa Gassis's Obesity and PCB Toxicity research team, presented The Role of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in the Development of Diabetes. Carolyn Hofe, a research assistant with Dr. Lisa Gaetke in the Community Outreach Core, presented Persistent Organic Pollutants, Dietary Intake, and the NHANES 2003-2004 on March 2nd. On March 23rd, Katryn Eske, of Dr. Bernhard Hennig's Endothelial Cell Dysfunction research team, presented Therapeutic Properties of Omega-3 Fatty Acids Against Inflammatory Stressors, while Maggie Murphy, also of Dr. Hennig's team, presented Diets and Exercise Modulate Polychlorinated Biphenyl Toxicity on March 31st.

The 2011 Research Translation Seminar Series has featured two recent UK-SRP program alums, presenting community outreach core and nonbiomedical project work. On February 23rd, Elizabeth Willett, M.A., a research assistant in Dr. Lisa Gaetke's Community Outreach Core, presented Improved Risk Communication through Assessment of Kentucky Citizens' Perceptions of Environmental Pollutants, Health, and Nutritional Behavior. On March 30th, Dr. Scott Lewis, a member of Dr. Dibakar Bhattacharyya's Chloro-Organic Degradation research team, presented Nanostructured Materials and Membranes for Water Purification.
