The Research Support Core of the Superfund Research Program at the University of Kentucky performs the vital role of supporting the research activities of multiple investigators involved in our SRP. The main objective of this Core is to provide a central facility that enhances and develops the research capabilities of our SRP, particularly in n the areas of systems biology, bioinformatics, proteomics, and PCB analysis.

Establishment of a coordinated effort in the form of the Research Support Core maximizes both the research and cost effectiveness of our SRP investigators. This Core is divided into four major components directed by an expert in each area:

1. Systems Biology Component - Directed by Dr. Black

2. Bioinformatics/Biostatistical Analysis Component - Directed by Dr. Stromberg

3. Proteomics Component - Directed by Dr. Zhu

4. Analytical Component - Directed by Dr. Wei

The overall activity of the Research Support Core is managed by Dr. Toborek in close collaboration with the coordinators of individual Components, Dr. Hennig (the Director of UK-SRP), Administration Core, and the Project Leaders of all individual grants.

The Specific Aims of the Research Support Core are to provide laboratory and statistical services, equipment, technical support, facilitate access to new technology (particularly in the areas of systems biology, bioinformatics, and proteomics for multiple SRP investigators by:

1) Generation of a central database which will combine diverse data generated by all research projects. This database will provide a uniform platform for computational data analysis, which will be shared among all projects. The systems biology approaches will then be implemented to generate new hypotheses and to create predictive models to better anticipate the effects of nutrition on toxicity of superfund chemicals;

2) Establishing and implementing a variety of state-of-the-art proteomics, bioinformatics, and PCB analysis procedures that are required by all investigators;

3) Providing assistance and consultations for data analysis and experimental design as required by individual investigators of the UK SBRP; and

4) Rigorous quality control of all aspects of the performed research.
