Hoover Receives Westley Award from UK College of Communications and Information Studies
(November 2010) - Anna Goodman Hoover, a member of the UK-SRP Research Translation Core, received the Bruce H. Westley Award from UK's College of Communication and Information Studies at the College's 2010 Recognition and Awards Dinner on November 5th.
As communications director for the Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute, Hoover oversees public information activities and coordinates a number of communication-related social scientific research initiatives for both KWRRI and the UK-SRP RTC. Specifically, she assists with the design and implementation of projects linking environmental concerns with risk and public communication processes. She also develops research projects and programs intended to further the bench-to-bedside translation of environmental health research outcomes into policy, practice, and ultimately public health, through the development of theory-based, methodologically-rigorous communication interventions at the researcher, governmental, and/or community levels.
Hoover is a third-year doctoral student in the Graduate Program in Communication, with a focus on risk and participatory communication theory and practice. She previously received her master's degree in communication science and her graduate certificate in health communication from the University of Kentucky. Her Westley award letter from the College of Communications and Information Studies specifically recognized her Community-Based Participatory Communication efforts at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant National Priority List Superfund site.
The Westley Award honors the memory of Bruce H. Westley, a former professor in the College and director of the School of Journalism and Telecommunications, and?is bestowed upon a graduate student who shows excellence in mass communication theory and research.
