In high school, I was involved in every single club, organization or team available that didn’t involve athletics. Lord knows I’m way too clumsy for that! I was everything from President of the Beta Club, a Captain of the Academic Team and Science Olympiad Team, a member of the National Honor Society for four years and a member of the band for six, a Freshmen Mentor, and so much more. I think this is what made it a little rough for my transition into college. I was so used to being the top dog, that it took more than a while to get used to big an extremely small fish in a pond of thousands. But I can honestly say that one thing that has helped me the most is the fact that I’m a Robinson Scholar and I’m surrounded by a family of scholars who I’d adopted since the eighth grade.
They’ve helped me not only grow academically, but as a person. I can honestly say I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them and that means a lot coming from the independent personality that I am. This is just one of the many reasons I’m thankful for the Robinson Scholars Program and everyone in it. Because of the program I feel secure not only financially, but mentally, physically, and educationally. On such a big campus in such a big city (compared to little ole FloCo) it’s nice to always have a familiar face there to help. Whether it’s needing help on homework, studying for an exam, walking back from campus after those dreaded night classes, or even our traditional watching of Duck Dynasty every Wednesday I’ve never had to do it alone.
I’ve met some of the greatest people and personally, my best friends, through this program so it’s always going to be a part of me. Not just in my next couple of years at UK, but in every single major milestone in my life, I hope to share it with the lifelong friends I’m proud to call my fellow scholars. I’ve never been more proud in my entire life than I am now to call myself a Class 12 Robinson Scholar and I plan to accomplish things far bigger than myself.
