Collaboration in the Spotlight: UK Public Relations & Marketing

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 1, 2009) – This semester has been one of change and progress for the Student Activities Board as they took on a new look, brand and overall structure. Transition can be difficult and sometimes slow down the development process, but with the help of the amazing people in UK’s PR/Marketing department, SAB has been progressive and productive this semester. As a board, we look forward to working with them and many other groups in the years to come. Working as a team and collaborating with people in different departments benefits everyone. We are given the opportunity to share ideas, learn from one another and grow as an organization. We talked to Kelley Bozeman, UK Marketing Director, about collaboration and her experience working students around campus…
  • What is your favorite thing about working with students?

I love working with UK students…they are my “continuing education” course. The enthusiasm and passion I see in their eyes makes my heart smile. Working with the student body is a very important part of my job as marketing director. It helps me stay engaged with the interests our students have. And it never fails, I always learn more from them than they do from me.

  • We learn so much every time we work with you (and others in your department); do you still find yourself learning from the students?

Without a doubt!... (see my answer to the first question). I am amazed at the ideas they come up with…the passion and love that they have for the University of Kentucky and their understanding of the words “giving back.” I treasure the conversations that I have with each and every student and I always walk away knowing that America’s future is in very good hands.

  • UK’s new website recognizes students, organizations, events, faculty and staff from all different areas around the university. Working with that many different people must take a lot of planning and collaboration…how has that experience been for your department? What advice do you have for students looking to collaborate?

UK’s Public Relations & Marketing Department is comprised of many talented people who are here to promote every area of UK. It’s what we do. Every day is different and you have to come to work each day prepared for anything. Anyone who has questions, concerns, or simply needs assistance should call or email us… (859) 257-3303 or ukpr@uky.edu.

  • What advice do you have to help students promote their organizations and events?

Social media is booming. Facebook has really changed the dynamics of sharing information. I would also encourage them to think about who their target audience is and really go after it – not every student at UK is interested in every event. UKPR & Marketing has several dedicated staff members who are assigned to work the “student” beat. They should contact our office for assistance with news releases, calendar entries, and story ideas. We are happy to help.

  • What is the best part about being involved with UKPR & Marketing?

The best part of working in PR & Marketing at UK is the involvement that you have with the entire campus. I feel like we are at the very center of everything that goes on. And, no two days are ever the same. (That’s good for a Type-A personality such as myself) :)

  • What kinds of opportunities does UKPR have for students?

We love student interns! Student who are interested in journalism, marketing, broadcast (video and audio), new media…etc. can apply to work in our office for class credit. They should send their resume and cover letter to UKPR & Marketing, Room 102a Mathews Bldg., Lexington, KY 40506-0047
