Bachelor of Arts in Social Work Program Assessment Results
Academic Year 2011-2012
The University of Kentucky Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The CSWE requires that accredited social work programs measure and report student learning outcomes. Students are assessed on their mastery of the competencies that comprise the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education. Each competency has been defined with specific practice behaviors (or outcomes) that include the knowledge, values, and skills required in social work practice that all social workers are expected to master during their professional education and preparation. The UK BASW program employs all of these competencies and practice behaviors in its program.
Assessment of student performance is ongoing and occurs annually. Social work programs set their measurement benchmark for each competency. An assessment score at or above that benchmark is considered by the program to represent mastery of that particular competency and utilizes five measures to assess student performance. All measures employed in the BASW program utilize the same Likert rating scale and measurement benchmark. Benchmarks and results are presented in the aggregate in the tables below.
Measure: Final Practicum Field Instructor Assessment of Student Performance
Benchmark: Likert rating scale using 1 to 5: An evaluation of 3 is defined as student consistently meets basic requirements of practice behavior (consistently demonstrates the ability to apply the knowledge, values, or skills necessary to perform the practice behavior at a basic, beginning, or foundational level)

Student learning performance data are collected annually. Results are analyzed and reviewed by the faculty in various forums the following year. Assessment findings and their implications are used to affirm the effectiveness of current curriculum and educational practices or to inform implicit and explicit curriculum change as indicated by results.
