Melissa received her B.S. in Corrections and Juvenile Services from Eastern Kentucky University (1991), her M.S.W. with a certificate in Gerontology from the University of Kentucky in 2008. She joined the faculty of the College of Social Work in 2009 as an instructor for the Credit for Learning (CFL) program.
Melissa is currently the Program Coordinator for the off campus Southeast Kentucky MSW programs located in Hazard and Prestonsburg. She is the Kentucky Project Manager for the Appalachian Community Cancer Network (ACCN) which is a team of community partners and academic collaborators from Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia working together to reduce cancer health disparities in the Appalachian region. Melissa is also active in the Kentucky Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers were she has served as Eastern Kentucky Branch Chair, Chapter Secretary and most recently as Chapter Vice President.
Prior to joining the faculty at the College of Social Work Melissa worked as a bereavement counselor providing individual sessions and group activities for survivors. Before this Melissa spent 19 years working with families and children in residential and foster care placements. Her last several years were spent as an administrator in a non-profit agency.
