Welcome From the Director

Greetings!

I would like to thank you for your interest in the College of Social Work and in the Bachelor of Arts in Social Work program. You are considering a degree in one of the nation's fastest growing and most diverse helping professions! The profession is in need of compassionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic people who want to become social workers and make aDr. Karen Badger difference in the lives of others.

This exciting path of study and the profession provides many choices regarding types of people and environments in which you may work. Graduates of social work programs have pursued various helping careers in arenas including: child welfare, gerontology, education, health care, mental health, international settings, and many more areas.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work at the University of Kentucky not only allows you the opportunity for a rewarding career, but also offers you an empowering experience as a student. For example, this was a statement recently made by one of our current students: "I've had two other majors at UK and this is the first time that anyone has answered my questions about what I can do with my degree and helped me develop an academic plan for graduation! I feel like I'm in a college that actually respects me and wants to help me succeed." (Troy Johnson – Junior Transfer Student)

In an effort to help our students be informed about their education, the college offers group advising conferences each semester along with individual advisor assignments. These conferences allow students to ask questions of one another and share their experiences regarding course content and expectations, practicum placements and other information that only comes from a student's perspective.

The College of Social Work also encourages our students to gain first hand experience in the field of social work through service projects organized by the student lead Social Work Association, and there are many opportunities to be involved as a participant or leader.

We are glad you are looking into joining the College of Social Work and will look forward to working with you should you choose this as your major. If you decide on social work for your course of study, you can become a pre-social work major at any point in your undergraduate studies by requesting a major change from your current college. If you have reviewed the requirements for admission to the major and you meet the pre-requisites, you can also complete an application to the major and submit it to me for review. Best wishes as you consider your future educational plans, and please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Karen Badger , Ph.D.
