EXCURSIONS TO RURAL SCHOOLS, CLINICS, & CULTURAL SITES

The state of Michoacan is located in the high central mountain chain of Mexico that runs from east of Mexico City to the most western extremes of Michoacan. This area is noted for its beauty and “eternal springtime” climate. The summer months comprise the rainy season rendering the mountains a thousand shades of green. The state of Michoacan is the home to the Purepecha people, who were never conquered by the Aztecs that had dominated central Mexico during the time of the Spanish conquest. The beautiful Lake Patzcuaro area lies about 40 miles south of Morelia and is surrounded by many villages making handicrafts and Purepecha ruins.

Course participants will make five all-day excursions to rural communities to visit rural schools, such as the bilingual Purepecha/Spanish school and the school for disabilities in Tzintzuntzan; medical clinics such as the one in Capula, and the remaining structures of the mountain clinic in La Zarzamora where the Sutphen’s worked 30 years ago; social development projects in Calabozo that offers hands-on experiences for students as well as the muebles taller of the Rosenthals in Erongaricuaro; rural community social service programs such as those found in Tarascon; and visits to ruins in Tzintzuntzan, cultural sites and events in Patzcuaro, and shopping for handicrafts and copper in Santa Clara del Cobre, Patzcuaro and Tzintzuntzan.
