The type of event is known to be a powerful predictor of psychiatric distress, and man-made disasters have historically produced more symptomatology than natural disasters because of the perceived intentionality of the event. Due to the high-risk for psychological casualties, understanding the impact of events of terrorism has been a specific focus of many training sessions. Emerging concerns regarding bioterrorism following the Anthrax scares of 2001 have necessitated the inclusion of this phenomenon into disaster preparedness trainings. The unique qualities of bioterrorism that increase the risk for psychological distress are discussed in this training, as well as factors that shape each individual’s response and evidence-based approaches to the assessment and treatment of traumatic stress often associated with these events. A video simulation of a bioterrorist attack is utilized in the training as the basis for exercises meant to stimulate learning and discussion among training participants.

Addressing the needs of this most vulnerable population and providing developmentally-appropriate interventions can be a challenge following an event of disaster. Training materials regarding the needs of children include specialized screening, early intervention and clinical assessment strategies, as well as information on empirically-supported interventions.
This training serves to inform healthcare providers regarding the specific needs of older adults during times of disaster.
Understanding the Influence of the Media
In this information age of minute-by-minute coverage of events, the media can be a mechanism of exposure to disasters and associated traumatic imagery. This training focuses on understanding the media’s influence, how exposure can adversely impact vulnerable populations, and strategies for meeting the needs of individuals impacted by media exposure.
This training provides information on rural mental health, disasters in rural areas and suggestions for responding to events of disaster in rural communities.
This training is a level two program that uses case studies to illustrate the principles of trauma-specific assessment and treatment approaches. Multiple empirically supported interventions are discussed.
This training assists professionals in understanding the concepts of compassion fatigue and burnout, and gives trainees the tools for self-assessment, prevention and intervention. Strategies for preventing compassion fatigue and burnout on an organizational level and in disaster response settings are also discussed.
