Comprehensive Assessment and Training Services Project

University of Kentucky Behavioral Health Disaster Response Project

The UK Behavioral Health Disaster Response Project disseminates multiple training curriculums designed to enhance and increase the capacity of health and mental health professionals to respond to events of disaster, terrorism or a public health emergency. To accomplish this task, the project utilizes innovative and evidenced-based health care system training strategies (i.e. telemedicine and existing training networks) to assist health and behavioral health providers in the detection and treatment of psychological distress following events of disaster, thereby reducing the risk of acute and chronic post-disaster psychopathology. As of January 2007, over 2600 healthcare providers have been trained by this project statewide, nationally and internationally.

Multiple training curriculums have been developed in order to meet the specific needs of training participants. The list below highlights some of the many areas of specialized training in disaster response offered by the UK Behavioral Health Disaster Response Project and additional services offered.

The UK Behavioral Health Disaster Response Project is associated with the University of Kentucky Comprehensive Assessment and Training Services (CATS) Project. Funding is provided by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response (ASPR) through grant #1 T01HP01397-01-00 to provide trainings to mental health professionals in collaboration with the University of Louisville to the following disciplines: psychiatry, psychology, social work, professional counseling, marriage and family therapy and drug and alcohol counseling. As of March 2007, approximately 2,500 healthcare providers have been trained by this project statewide, nationally and internationally.
