Biography Michele Staton Tindall, Ph.D., M.S.W., is an Assistant Professor in the College of Social Work and a Faculty Associate of the Center for the Study of Violence Against Children and the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research. She received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Kentucky (1996), her M.S.W. from the University of Kentucky (1998), and her doctorate in Social Work from the University of Kentucky (2004). Currently, Dr. Staton-Tindall is the Principal Investigator on project funded by the Kentucky Department of Corrections entitled, “Criminal Justice Kentucky Treatment Outcome Study (CJKTOS)”. This project examines treatment outcomes among prison and jail inmates who receive substance abuse treatment in Kentucky. Dr. Staton-Tindall is the Principal Investigator for a project funded by SAMHSA/Center on Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) focused on enhancing comprehensive substance abuse treatment services for women and their children. She also serves as PI for a CSAT project focused on enhancing substance abuse treatment for homeless women. She serves as Co-Investigator on a 11 state cooperative agreement funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) entitled Criminal Justice Drug Abuse Treatment Studies (CJDATS) which focuses on the design, implementation, and testing of interventions for incarcerated substance users during the transition from prison to the community. In addition to these studies and her involvement in three other on-going research projects, Dr. Staton-Tindall has collaborated on six grants submitted to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the past two years. She recently submitted her first NIH application as a Principal Investigator to examine treatment utilization among rural women offenders during the transition from prison to the community. Dr. Staton-Tindall has published in the area of women and substance abuse, prison-based treatment, health service use among incarcerated women, and employment among drug offenders. One of her publications, “Substance use, health, and mental health: Problems and service utilization among incarcerated women”, was recently spotlighted as one of five peer reviewed journal articles highlighting the unique treatment needs of incarcerated women in the NIDA (2006) publication, Principles of Drug Abuse Treatment for Criminal Justice Populations. She has published 19 first-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals, an additional four publications accepted or in press, and collaboration on an additional 50 manuscripts as a co-author which are either in print, in press, or accepted. In addition, Dr. Staton-Tindall has contributed regularly at national and international scientific meetings, including presentations at the College on the Problems of Drug Dependence annual meetings and the Society for Social Work and Research annual meetings. She serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for several journals and has been the Editor of two special issues of Substance Use and Misuse. |
