- Congratulations to Crystal Collins-Camargo for completing her Ph.D. on March 17, 2005. She successfully defended her dissertation, “A Study of the Relationships among Effective Supervision, Organizational Culture Promoting Evidence-Based Practice, Worker Self-Efficacy, and Outcomes in Public Child Welfare.” She is the 8th Ph.D. graduate from the College of Social Work.
- The University of Kentucky College of Social Work will welcome its newest inductee, Robert Walker, of Lexington, into its Hall of Fame on April 28. Walker will be inducted at a reception held 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at The Lafayette Club, Lexington. He has been a major force in shaping Central Kentucky and the state’s mental health service delivery. From 1979 to 1998, Walker was Center Director for the Bluegrass East Comprehensive Care Center. In this capacity, he was responsible for over 40 programs and approximately 300 staff in residential, personal care, outpatient, intensive outpatient, day programs, prevention, and case management services. Among his various accomplishments was developing a domestic violence offender program, an intensive supervision program for probationers with drug dependencies, and services for those in detention. Currently, Walker is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Center on Drug and Alcohol Research where he is engaged in multiple research projects focusing on substance-related disorders and their co-occurrence with violence, domestic violence, traumatic or acquired brain injury, fatherhood, and mental disorders. He has conjoint faculty appointments in the Colleges of Social Work and Medicine.
- The College of Social Work is sponsoring a workshop entitled “Measurement: Theory and Applications in social work Research” on Thursday and Friday, April 21 & 22, 2005. Dr. Bill Nugent, director of the PhD program at the University of Tennessee, is conducting the seminar. Dr. Nugent is a summer workshop presenter on meta-analysis and the use of hierarchical linear modeling for the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research in Washington, DC.

- Dr. Dinah Anderson, Program Coordinator in the College of Social Work, will join Dr. Joanne Melish, Director of the American Studies Program in the History Department, for the third program in the Lexington Network's Reparations Series, "The Connection between Slavery, Racism and the Reparations Movement." The community will be giving out Drum Major for Peace awards to one man, one woman, one student, and one organization to recognize their efforts in peacemaking. Dr. Ginny Sprang and Dr. Jim Clark were awarded a HURSA bio terrorism grant.
This is a collaborative effort between the University of Louisville and
UK.
Public Health, Pharmacy, Agriculture and Social Work from UK are the awardees
and Infectious Disease, Medical Education and Public Health from U of L
are
the awardees. Drs. Sprang and Clark are working with the "second response" from
the mental health system should a terrorist attach occur. However, the
work will help mental health services systems be more responsive to childhood
traumas as well.
