Greetings!

Thank you for your interest in the Bachelor of Arts in Social WoDr. Karen Badgerrk.
You are considering a degree in one of the nation’s fastest growing and most diverse helping professions! Our profession needs compassionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic people who want to become social workers and make a difference in the lives of others and our communities- we appreciate your interest in considering our program and this rewarding career.

The exciting path of study in social work provides many choices regarding the types of people and settings in which you may work. Graduates have pursued helping careers with such groups as the elderly, immigrants/refugees, children and adolescents, and in settings such as child welfare, schools, healthcare clinics and hospitals, day treatment, residential care, criminal justice, refugee resettlement agencies, and agencies meeting community needs.

The profession of social work will provide you with the opportunity to empower others to improve their lives, and at the UK College of Social Work we want to empower you as a student to meet your educational goals and ready yourself for advanced education and the job market. Our curriculum includes elective options so that you can explore your individual interests as well as those topics and social problems central to the social work profession. There are two ways to begin your study as a social work student: (1) entering UK as a pre-social work major, or (2) changing your current major at UK to pre-social work by requesting your records from your current college and bringing them to POT 613. Once you meet the pre-requisites that are outlined in the social work major application, you may apply for admission to the social work major and begin to take the professional social work courses (once accepted.) You will also find more information about our program and curriculum in the BASW Student Handbook.

We take advantage of our status of being a small college located within a large University. As a student here, you will have access to the amenities and rich learning environment that are part of a Research I institution, and you will also be part of a smaller “student-centered” college community. There will be opportunities for you to get involved outside the classroom through special events and organizations such as the Student Ambassador program, the Social Work Student Association, and the Phi Alpha Social Work National Honor Society. Group advising, which Student Ambassadors attend, is offered each semester in addition to individual advising to help students network with each other and get advice about courses and other topics. Should you decide to be part of the BASW program, I encourage you to participate in these activities. These “extras” will augment your learning, help you to develop professional and leadership skills, assist you in building connections, and help you make the most of your College experience!

I appreciate your consideration of the BASW program at UK and will look forward to working with you should decide to join the College! Best wishes in your future educational plans and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Karen Badger , Ph.D.
