Staff Appreciation Day 2009 will be held in the Student Center on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 from 10:30 AM -1:30 PM. This year's event is sponsored by the Staff Senate, Office of the President, and Office of Finance and Administration.

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO STAFF APPRECIATION DAY 2009

Three major changes are going to take place this year:

1. T-Shirts – You MUST attend to receive a t-shirt. No extras will be mailed or handed out.
2. Door Prizes – You WILL be eligible for door prizes without having to attend the event.
3. Food – There will be fewer food choices and locations this year.

T-Shirts Limited to Event Only

Staff Appreciation Day t-shirts are always in high demand and in the past we’ve never been able to provide as many as everyone would like to have. We’ve sometimes allowed folks to pick up extras for colleagues who couldn’t make it and sent t-shirts out to those who requested them.

This year t-shirts will be provided only for those who are able to attend and only one per person. Why? To save on expenses. T-shirts are the most expensive part of Staff Appreciation Day and while we do get a very good discounted price, it still requires thousands of t-shirts to hand out at the event. Over time we have been gradually increasing the number purchased, but this year we could not do that due to budget constraints.

Provided we have leftover t-shirts, they will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis to individuals only (we still won't be filling unit requests this year). Please submit your name, size, and campus or office address if you work off campus by contacting Chuck Miday, cmiday@email.uky.edu or 257-4378. The request does NOT guarantee that you will receive a shirt.

Food Options

The Staff Senate would like to thank UK Dining Services for once again providing the food at a greatly discounted price.

This year less variety will be available. The menu includes hot dogs, BBQ sandwiches, veggie burgers, chips, and cookies. Canned soft drinks and bottled water will accompany the food.

This year food will all be served outdoors on the patio and in a tent located in the parking lot off Euclid Avenue. The exception is the veggie burgers which will be served in front of Café du Chat. Café du Chat is located between the Cat's Den and the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) and may be accessed from the patio.


Transportation

Campus buses will pick up/drop off employees in front of the Chandler Medical Center and Ag. North. The drop off location at the event will be at the corner of Administration Drive and Patterson Drive. To catch a bus back, employees will go to the top of the steps coming up from the patio on Patterson Drive just around the corner from where they were dropped off. Those unable to climb stairs may use the bridge to exit the Student Center, go in front of the Buell Armory and around the corner. Those unable to manage that walk will find golf carts in the area to transport them to and from the bus stops.

Employees located in off-campus offices in Lexington and out of town may park in Parking Structure #5 directly across from the Student Center.


Exhibitors and Exhibitor Display Judging

UK departments and some contracted vendors will set up booths to share information and giveaways. The best display will be chosen by a panel of judges and awarded a prize.

Life Beyond UK

Here is a chance for UK employees to showcase their creative works. Share your hobby with other UK employees and show there is Life Beyond UK.

Employees already signed up include: Adrienne McMahan (jewelry), Ginni Haynes (scrap booking), Michael Richardson (swing dancing), Margaret Marquis (roller derby) and Rebecca Flanagan (stamping).

Volunteers

The success of Staff Appreciation Day depends on volunteers. Members of the Staff Senate take the lead in the planning and organization behind the scenes, assisted by numerous other volunteers from the staff.

Yet it takes many more volunteers to help during the event itself. They are needed to hand out t-shirts, assist with door prize awards, provide directions to attendees, and much more. Many employees have already responded to calls for help, but more may be needed.

Let Us Entertain You!

This year there will be live music in the Cat’s Den just off the patio area. The three bands that will play are Eyesuponus, Messenger, and Bad Train. In addition both theaters will be open showing films of past UK Sports highlights. And be on the lookout for three special characters you may find roaming around.
