5-on-5 Basketball League

The National Federation of State High School Associations Rules shall be followed in cooperation with UK Intramural Rules. National Federation rules can be found on the web at www.nfhs.org under Rules Information. UK IM rule exceptions and clarifications are as follows:

Eligibility
UK Intramurals are open to the University of Kentucky community as follows:

  • Students – all students currently enrolled at UK and BCTC.
  • Faculty and Staff – all regular UK and BCTC Faculty and Staff members. These F/S members must be eligible for the UK Faculty/Staff “Blue/White Card.”
  • Spouses of eligible students‚ faculty and staff are eligible only for IM Co–Rec Basketball Tournament as there is no Co–Rec Basketball League offered.

Exceptions in Eligibility

  • Former or current professionals in an event or related event are ineligible.
  • Former college varsity players are ineligible for two full semesters following their last college contest played.

Identification
Valid UK and BCTC IDs are required for check–in and participation at all UK Intramural events.

  • Students – UK and BCTC students must present their valid UK “Wildcard” student photo ID or valid BCTC student photo ID.
  • Faculty and Staff – must present their valid UK F/S photo ID or the UK “Blue/White Card” and another form of photo ID such as a driver’s license. UK Medical Center personnel may present their Med Center photo ID.

Note: Bernard M. Johnson Center faculty/staff IDs may not be used for Intramural purposes other than as photo ID with the “Blue/White card.”

General

  • All participants must sign Intramural Waiver Forms to participate.
  • No Jewelry is permitted.
  • No hats‚ skull caps‚ bandanas or other headgear. Only a terry–cloth headband made for athletic purposes may be worn.
  • Athletic apparel must be worn for athletic events.
  • For all league–play events (Basketball‚ Flag Football‚ Volleyball‚ etc.)‚ teams may add players until their final game at which time rosters are frozen for the playoffs. Participants must compete in at least one regular season contest to be eligible for the playoffs. Forfeit games count as games played for all participants signing in.

Dunking‚ Hanging from or Snapping of the Rim

  • Dunking‚ attempted dunking‚ hanging or snapping of the rim is prohibited in the Seaton Center at all times.
  • Players committing these acts will receive a technical foul and will be ejected from the contest and the building.

Team Captain’s Responsibilities

  • Attend the Captain’s Meeting and inform his/her team of all rules‚ game times and playing courts. Game information such as dates‚ times‚ etc. will not be given over the telephone. Failure to attend Captain’s Meetings earn each team without representation a “D” grade and a forfeit towards sportsmanship.
  • Become familiar with rules‚ policies and procedures‚
  • Be sure each team member signs an INTRAMURAL WAIVER FORM for basketball.
  • Check scoresheet for correct roster or record line–up prior to game time and make sure your team signs in. If a game is still being played on your scheduled court‚ you may obtain a scoresheet from the IM supervisor. Teams should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled game time for check–in purposes.
  • To direct or control his/her team’s players and be responsible for any discussions with the officials.
  • Be familiar with all pertinent schedules‚ rules and other Intramural information specifically available for Team Captains.
  • Team captains are responsible for the eligibility of their players.
  • Team captains are responsible for their fans during games.

Teams

  • A team roster may consist of twelve (12) persons‚ players and coaches. Only these team persons will be permitted on the team’s sideline.
  • Five players is a complete team of play.
  • A minimum of four (4) players must be on the floor ready to play at the scheduled time. Teams cannot start a contest with less than four players. The 10–minute rule is in effect.
  • Each team must be able to provide one person to work at the score table for the entire game when needed. We should have enough officials to cover the games. However‚ in situations where a scorekeeper is needed‚ a team not providing one may forfeit the game. This person does not have to be a player but must have an understanding of basketball and score keeping. Please be prepared for these instances to avoid forfeits.

Players and Substitutions

  • A player may play on only one team. Once a player plays for a second team he/she becomes an illegal player and will be ineligible for any IM participation until having met with the IM Director.
  • Team rosters must be completed and‚ along with fees‚ submitted by the entry deadline day to be included in the basketball league. Additions to rosters may be made throughout the league play and may be made up and until the team’s final game or until all roster spots are filled‚ whichever occurs first.
  • Players must play in at least one regular season game to be eligible for the playoffs.
  • Each player must sign an INTRAMURAL WAIVER FORM for basketball to participate.
  • Any team that uses a player under an assumed name will be disqualified for the remainder of the sport season and ineligible for all IM participation until meeting with the IM Director.
  • All players must present their valid UK or BCTC ID to check into the game before entering play. Substitutions must report to the score table before entering the game and be beckoned onto the court by the officials.
  • Only the team captain may address the referee.

The Games

  • Games will consist of two (2) 20-minute halves with a running clock except during time-outs.
  • The clock will stop for all whistles during the final minute of the first half and the final two (2) minutes of the second half.
  • There will be a three (3) minute intermission between halves.
  • Mercy Rule: If at any time during the last three (3) minutes of the game a team attains a 20-point or more lead‚ the game will be ended.
  • Each team is allowed three (3) time-outs per game.
  • Unused time-outs shall not be carried over to overtime periods. Each team shall have one timeout for overtime regardless of the number of overtime periods to be played.
  • Overtime shall consist of a three (3) minute time period.
    1. The clock will stop for all whistles in the final two minutes of each overtime period.
    2. In each overtime period‚ the same procedures for fouls will be followed as during the final two (2) minutes of each half.
    3. There will be a one (1) minute intermission between overtime periods.
  • Scoring
    1. Field goals from beyond the 3-point line – 3 points
    2. All other field goals – 2 points.
    3. Free Throw – 1 point.
    4. Forfeit or default – 33-0.
  • THE 10–MINUTE RULE. Once game time arrives‚ the clock will start. Any team (Team A) not ready with a complete team of at least five players will be penalized with three (3) points being awarded to their opponent (Team B) beginning with the initial start of the clock and then each subsequent minute until ten minutes have elapsed. Once the 10-minutes have elapsed at the 10-minute mark of the first half‚ the game will be forfeit. If the offending team (Team A)‚ has enough players arrive late‚ the scoring will end when they are signed in and play will begin with the ball out of bounds to the opponent (Team B) and the possession arrow to the offending team.

Fouls and Free Throws

  • Each player will be disqualified on his/her 5th foul of the game. All technical fouls will count as personal fouls and toward the team total.
  • All shooting fouls will result in two (2) or three (3) free throws being awarded on a missed attempt. Shooting fouls on made attempts will result in the basket being counted and one (1) free throw.
  • Common fouls up to and including the 6th team foul of a half shall result in a spot throw–in for the offended team. Common fouls resulting in team fouls 7 through and including 9 of a half shall result in a 1 and 1 Bonus situation. All team fouls above and including the 10th shall result in two (2) free throws.
  • Two (2) technical fouls against a player or coach shall result in an ejection.
  • Three (3) technical fouls against a team shall result in a forfeited game.
  • The penalty for an intentional/flagrant personal foul is two (2) free throws for the offended player and possession of the ball for the offended team. Flagrant fouls also carry an automatic ejection from the contest for the offending player.
  • All technical fouls shall result in two (2) free throws and possession of the ball.
  • Team captains are responsible for fans. Any technical fouls given for unsportsmanlike behavior on the fans will be assessed to the team captain.

Conduct/Sportsmanship

  • The Intramural Sportsmanship Policy is very explicit in explaining conduct necessary to participate in this program. Every participant is expected to know the guidelines set by this policy.
  • Team Grades – Teams will be graded for every game played. Grades will be A‚ B‚ C‚ D or E. Forfeits for being unprepared to play and defaults are automatic “D” grades. Teams must achieve a minimum 3.00 Quality Point Average to be eligible for playoff participation.
  • Forfeits due to unsportsmanlike conduct are automatic “E” grades. The captain of any team receiving an “E” grade must meet with the Intramural Director before his/her team may play again. Two (2) “E” grades during the regular season shall result in the team being removed from play.

Any player ejected from a game must meet with the Intramural Director before his/her eligibility is restored. The following cases shall receive an automatic suspension of a minimum of one (1) game and must meet with the Intramural Director before the suspension begins and eligibility can be restored.

  • Fighting will not be tolerated. Teams are responsible for their players and fans. Players ejected for fighting or mistreatment of officials may be suspended from Intramural participation for a calendar year. All fighting incidents shall be reported to the Intramural Director and the offenders will be required to meet with the IM Director before suspensions officially start and eligibility status can be determined.
  • Unsportsmanlike Conduct – Any team (coaches‚ players and fans) criticizing or otherwise obstructing‚ boisterously ridiculing or attempting to demean an Official or Supervisor shall be liable to expulsion and disciplinary action. In addition‚ the game may be stopped at the discretion of the supervisor or official.
  • Bench Clearing Incidents–Any team‚ participant or fan leaving the bench area and giving the impression of undesirable behavior will be suspended from Intramural participation and cause forfeiture of the game.
  • Dunking‚ hanging‚ snapping of the rim or attempted dunking is prohibited in the Seaton Center at all times.
  • Players committing these acts will receive a technical foul and will be ejected from the contest and the building.
  • Any player‚ coach or fan ejected from a game will have two (2) minutes to leave the Seaton Center or his/her team will forfeit the game.

Other General UK Rules and Procedures

  • Basketballs
    • The IM Department will provide game balls. These balls are not for warm–up use. Practice balls may be checked out from the equipment room‚ but valid UK IDs are required for player check–in to games.
  • Jerseys
    • Teams are encouraged to wear their own jerseys‚ but jerseys must have a number on the front‚ back or both.
    • Numbered Intramural jerseys shall be available for check–out.
    • Shirts must be worn under Intramural jerseys.
  • Head decorations‚ headwear and jewelry
    • Hats‚ bandanas‚ sleeves‚ hair beads and stocking caps are prohibited. No exceptions.
    • Only single piece headbands no wider than two (2) inches and made of nonabrasive and unadorned single–colored cloth‚ elastic‚ fiber‚ soft leather or rubber may be worn.
    • Rubber/cloth (elastic) bands may be used to control hair. Metal‚ hard plastic or any unyielding material is prohibited.
    • Jewelry is prohibited. General jewelry includes earrings‚ finger rings‚ tongue rings‚ necklaces‚ or other piercings or adornments that could pose a safety risk to any intramural participant.
  • Protests
    • There will be no protests of judgment calls. Protests of rule interpretation must be made at the time of the incident. Graduate Assistants or Supervisors will be called into administer the rule or protest. Their decision will be final.
    • Eligibility protests must be submitted in writing to 172 Johnson Center‚ the IM office‚ by 12:00–noon the following business day of the game in question.
  • Blood Rule
    • A player who is bleeding‚ has an open wound or has any blood on his/her uniform must leave the game and may not return until the problem properly addressed.
    • No player will be permitted to enter or reenter the game as long as there is blood on his/her jersey or uniform.
