Co-Rec Basketball
Current National Federation of State High School Association’s Basketball Rules and interpretations shall govern play in addition to all UK IM regular basketball league rules and interpretations. The following modifications have been included for Co–Rec play.
Players and Equipment
Players
- Five players comprise a complete team on the floor.
- A minimum of four players are needed ready to play at game time to start a contest with the requirement of two players being male and two female.
- The male/female make up of the playing team is the decision of each team under the guideline that there may not be more than a one player difference in gender at any time on the floor. For example‚ there may not a team of 4 men and one woman or 3 women and one man.
- When a full team compliment is available‚ the team make up on the floor will be either 3 women and 2 men or 3 men and 2 women.
- The team roster limit is 12 players per team.
- Rosters are frozen after a team’s first played game.
The Ball
- The men’s basketball shall be used for UK Co–Rec basketball play.
- Note: A women’s ball is recommended and shall be used for tournament regional and national competition. Regardless of the ball used during UK IM play‚ the women’s ball will be probably be used during any extramural tournaments.
Timing and Scoring
Timing
- The game shall consist of two twenty–minute halves
- he clock will run continuously until the last two minutes of each half when it will stop for all fouls‚ violations‚ and time–outs.
- Half–time will be three minutes in length.
- Each team is permitted three time–outs per game‚ each one minute in length.
- The 10–Minute Rule is in effect should a team not be prepared with its minimum number of players. 3 points shall be awarded to the prepared team with the start of the game clock and for each subsequent minute the opponent is unprepared. At the 10 minute mark of the first half the game shall be forfeit should the opponent not have a complete team.
Overtime
- If the score is tied at the end of regulation play‚ a three minute overtime period will be played.
- The clock will run continuously until the last minute of the period when it will stop for all fouls‚ violations‚ and time–outs.
- Each team is allowed one time–out‚ one minute in length.
- Time–outs from regulation play are not carried to overtime.
Scoring
- Each field goal by a female will carry a bonus of one (1) additional point.
Fouls and Penalties
- All free throw attempts‚ regardless of the gender shooting‚ shall count for one (1) point.
- Free throws attempted for fouls‚ however‚ shall be in accordance with their point values according to gender. Male players will shoot two or three shots when fouled during a field goal attempts and females will shoot three or four
- Bonus and Double Bonus foul situations shall be the same for all players‚ one–and–one or two shots respectively
- All technical fouls shall be administered as per NFHS rules
- All intentional and flagrant fouls shall be administered as per NFHS rules with the exception of these types of fouls committed during the act of shooting by a female which would also be administered as per UK Co–Rec rules
Controlling Play
- There are no restrictions on player movement on the court of play. For example‚ male players may move freely through the free throw lane area.
- There are no restrictions in regards to competitive match–ups on the court of play. For example‚ it is not illegal for a male player to guard a female player.
- There are no rules stating that one team playing with 3 male players has to be matched by the other team also playing with 3 male players. For example‚ one team may play 3 men and 2 women while the opponent plays 3 women and 2 men.
