*** The following 3-on-3 Red-Zone Challenge rules are based on the 2007-2008 NIRSA Flag & Touch Football Rules Book & Officials Manual.
- Any rules not specifically mentioned below will follow the NIRSA Flag Football rules.
- All penalties are enforced as in regular 7-on-7 NIRSA Flag Football.
GENERAL
- This event is open to those currently eligible for participation in UK Intramural events. For eligibility requirements and more IM policies and procedures, please see the UK Intramural webpage at www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/CampusRec/Intramurals
- Divisions will be offered in men’s, women’s and co-rec.
- The Roster limit is four (4) players per team.
- Three (3) players are required to avoid a forfeit.
- Rosters are frozen after the first played contest in tournament play.
- Should pool play be involved, teams shall have until the end of their pool play schedule to add players to complete the team’s four (4) player limit.
- Game time is forfeit time. There is not a version of the 10-minute rule in effect for this event as games are untimed.
THE GAME
- Each game will have three sets of possessions with the teams alternating offense and defense.
- The winner of a pre-game coin toss shall have the choice of offense or defense for the first and third sets of possessions.
- The loser of the pre-game coin toss shall have choice of offense or defense for the second set of possessions.
- Each possession will be a series of four downs to score a touchdown.
- A series may be extended via penalty as per NIRSA penalty enforcements.
- Each series will start from the 20-yard line.
- There is a 25-second play-clock per down. A series ends with a score or a turnover.
- The defense may not score on an interception but the offense’s series ends with the INT.
- Teams may substitute between each down provided they can do so within the 25-second play-clock and prior to the snap of the ball.
- The defensive rusher acts as the offensive snapper for the quarterback.
- The defensive rusher must snap the ball on the quarterbacks signal regardless of his team’s preparedness to play the down.
- The offense must have at least one player on the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball.
- The snap originates from ground level and must be a clean, direct snap to the chest area of the quarterback.
- The game official judges the snap quality.
- Two (2) consecutive bad snaps whistled by the official will result in an illegal procedure penalty against the defense and a 5-yard penalty, down repeated.
- Once the ball is snapped to the quarterback, the defensive rusher is on a 3-second delay before permitted to rush the quarterback.
- The 3-second must be counted out loud by the defensive rusher before crossing the line of scrimmage
- The count will be “One Kentucky, Two Kentucky, Three Kentucky”
- No one (quarterback or otherwise, male or female in Co-Rec) may advance the ball across the line of scrimmage on the run and be the first player on that play to break the line of scrimmage.
- Movement behind the line of scrimmage is allowed, but only a forward pass can advance the football beyond the line of scrimmage.
- In Co-Rec play, no one, male or female, may advance the ball across the line of scrimmage on the run and be the first player on that play to break the line of scrimmage.
- A player is down when he/she is de-flagged.
- Scoring:
- A touchdown counts six (6) points in all women’s and men’s division play and in Co-Rec play on scores not involving a female passer or receiver.
- In Co-Rec play, a touchdown involving a female throwing the pass or crossing the goal line in possession of the ball results in nine (9) points.
- After all touchdowns scored in flag football, the scoring team may select to take one play from following Point After Touchdown options:
- One (1) extra point from the 3-yard line.
- Two (2) points from the 10-yard line.
- Three (3) points from the 20-yard line.
- Overtime Tie-Breaking procedures:
- Overtime periods shall consist of one play for each team from the 10-yard line.
- The first team to score from the 10-yard line in one play, when the other team’s attempt fails, is declared the winner.
- Teams may receive additional plays as NIRSA penalty enforcements warrant.
- The winner of a coin toss shall have the choice of offense or defense for the first and all subsequent odd sets of possessions (i.e. first, third, fifth, etc. overtime periods).
- The loser of the coin toss shall have choice of offense or defense for the second and all subsequent even set of possessions (i.e. second, fourth, sixth, etc. overtime periods).
- The Ball
- Men’s divisions shall use the full size football.
- Women’s divisions shall use the full size, junior size or youth football.
- Co-Rec divisions shall use the full size, junior size or youth football.
THE CO-REC GAME
- Miscellaneous Co-Rec Rules
- In Co-Rec play, no one (quarterback or otherwise, male or female) may advance the ball across the line of scrimmage on the run and be the first player on that play to break the line of scrimmage.
- Team Make-up: It is the decision of each team as to their on the field line-up.
- Teams may play with two (2) females and one (1) male or with one (1) female and two (2) males.
- The defense does not have to reciprocate the line-up of the offense and vice versa.
- Open and closed plays:
- If the play is OPEN there are no restrictions on who can throw or catch the ball.
- If the play is CLOSED there can be no male to male completion.
- Penalty for male to male completion on a CLOSED play is illegal procedure, 5 yards from the previous spot, repeat the down.
- Male to Male Completion:
- During the offensive team’s possession there may not be 2 consecutive legal forward pass completions from a male passer to a male receiver.
- If a male passer completes a legal forward pass to a male receiver, the next legal forward pass completion must involve either a female passer or a female receiver for positive yards.
- This rule also applies to the try.
- The spot where the ball becomes dead by rule must be beyond the scrimmage line.
- There are no other restrictions concerning a male passer completing legal forward passes to a female receiver, or female to female, or female to male.
- Penalty: Illegal Forward Pass, 5 yards from the spot where the second consecutive male to male completed legal forward pass is released, and a loss of down.
- Any foul, whether accepted or declined, shall have no effect on whether the next legal forward pass completion is OPEN or CLOSED.
- Opening a Closed Play: A CLOSED play become OPEN when there has been:
- A play with a completed legal forward pass,
- resulting in positive yards,
- and involving a female player either throwing or receiving.
- All three (a, b and c) must be present to open a closed play. If one of the three is missing, the following play will remain CLOSED.
- Scoring:
- In Co-Rec play, a touchdown results in six (6) points on male scores not involving a female passer or female ball-carrier crossing the goal line.
- In Co-Rec play, a touchdown involving a female passer throwing the pass to anyone that leads to a score or a female ball-carrier crossing the goal line results in nine (9) points.
- After touchdowns scored in flag football, the scoring team may select to take one play from following Point After Touchdown options:
- One (1) extra point from the 3-yard line.
- Two (2) points from the 10-yard line.
- Three (3) points from the 20-yard line.
