Soccer
Eligibility
UK Intramurals are open to the University of Kentucky community as follows:
- Students – all students currently enrolled at UK and BCTC.
- Faculty and Staff – all regular UK and BCTC faculty and staff members. These faculty/staff members must be eligible for the UK faculty/staff “Blue/White Card.”
- Spouses of eligible students‚ faculty and staff – may participate in Co–Rec events only and must be on the same roster with their UK spouse.
Exceptions in Eligibility
- Former or current professionals in an event or related event are ineligible.
- Former college or university varsity players are ineligible for two full semesters following their last college or university contest played.
- Current club sport players in an event or related event are limited 3 to a team.
Identification
Valid UK and BCTC IDs are required for check–in and participation at all UK Intramural events.
- Students – UK and BCTC students must present their valid UK or BCTC student photo ID.
- Faculty and Staff – must present their UK “Blue/White Card” and another form of photo ID such as a driver’s license or the new faculty/staff photo ID. Medical Center personnel may present their Medical Center photo ID. Bernard M. Johnson Center faculty/staff IDs may also be used for Intramural purposes.
- Spouses – of eligible participants must present a valid driver’s license for Co–Rec events.
General
- Check the rules for each individual event for specific details.
- All participants must sign Intramural Waiver Forms to participate.
- No Jewelry is permitted for any UK Intramural events where physical contact may occur. These events include but are not limited to Flag Football‚ Soccer‚ 3–on–3 and 5–on–5 Basketball‚ Volleyball‚ Softball‚ Tug–O–War‚ Innertube H2O Polo‚ Wiffleball‚ Racquetball‚ Team Handball‚ and Ultimate Frisbee.
- Athletic apparel must be worn for athletic events. Other specific guidelines on apparel such as shoes or cleats may be enforced depending upon the event. Shoes must be worn! Metal cleats‚ screw–ins‚ boots‚ and sandals are prohibited.
- For all league–play events (Basketball‚ Flag Football‚ Volleyball‚ etc.)‚ teams may add players until their final game at which time rosters are frozen for the playoffs. Participants must compete in at least one regular season contest to be eligible for the playoffs.
- For all tournament events‚ rosters are frozen after the team/individual’s first played contest. Forfeits received or given are not considered played contests for roster purposes
- For all events unless otherwise stated‚ players are limited to playing in/on one single–sex division/team. Individuals may‚ however‚ also participate in/on a Co–Rec division or team if offered.
Current National Federation of State High School Associations Soccer Rules and the following University of Kentucky Intramural Rules and Modifications will govern play:
The Team
- A team shall consist of seven (7) players‚ 6 field players and 1 goalie. 6 players ARE REQUIRED to begin the game (5 field players and 1 goalie).
- Each team should bring a bright colored shirt for their goalie.
Co–Rec Rules
Co–Recreational Rules are generally the same as Men’s and Women’s Soccer Rules except for the following:
- Co–Rec teams must have a minimum of 3 female players on the field at all times. Teams will play with a combination of 3 female and 4 male players or 4 female and 3 male players. There may not be more than a one–player difference in sexes. (Ex. A team may not play with 5 female and 2 male players)
- A team playing with only 6 players must have 3 female and 3 male players.
- All substitutions must be of the same sex.
- In overtime shoot outs 2 females must shoot for each team.
Rosters‚ Players‚ and Substitutions
- Participants may play on only one SINGLE SEX TEAM‚ but may also play on a CO–REC TEAM.
- All participants must be current UK or BCTC students‚ faculty or staff.
- All participants must sign a waiver for each team on which they play. Please arrive AT LEAST 30 minutes prior to your first match in order to complete all paperwork before game–time.
- Substitutions may only be made:
- On a goal kick
- After a goal has been scored
- Between halves.
- When a player is cautioned (yellow card)
- On YOUR TEAM’S throw–in.
- On YOUR TEAM’S Corner kick
- An illegal substitution will result in an indirect free kick from the location of the ball at the time of the infraction. Repeated infractions will result in a yellow card being issued to the offending player.
- Substitutes must notify the referee‚ and receive permission before entering the game. Any changes in goaltending must be reported to the officials.
Duration of the Game
- The 10–minute Rule is in effect.
- The game will consist of two 20–minute halves.
- Halftime will be 5 minutes.
- The clock will run continuously except on injuries and when the official’s discretion warrants stopping the game. The clock does not stop on goals or when the ball crosses the end line.
- In the event the score remains tied after 40 minutes of play‚ penalty shots will be used to decide the result of the contest in the following manner:
- Each captain will designate five (5) shooters in the order they will shoot. The same order will be used for all shoot–outs.
- The head referee will choose the goal for all penalty shots.
- A coin toss will be conducted. The winner shall have the choice of kicking first or second.
- Teams will alternate kickers. There is no follow up on kicks.
- All kicks will take place from the 12–yard penalty line.
- The goalie may not move until the ball is kicked.
- Following five kickers for each team‚ the team scoring the greater number of goals shall be declared the winner. One goal will be added to the winning team’s score.
- If the score remains tied after the first round of penalty kicks‚ the above procedure will be repeated in a sudden death manner until the tie is broken.
NOTE: During the overtime periods the ball has to become dead or it must have no opportunity to score before the try has ended. (Ex. If the ball is kicked and it rebounds off the goal and hits the goalie or the ground and then it goes into the goal it is a goal.)
Equipment
- Shoes – Rubber molded cleats may be won. No Screw in cleats. No bare feet will be allowed. If any exposed metal is showing on any style of cleat‚ that cleat will not be permitted. These are the same cleat rules as with Flag Football.
- Goalies may wear gloves.
- The Intramural Sports Office will provide game balls. However a game may be played with any regulation size ball that both teams agree upon.
- SHIN GUARDS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
Scoring
- A goal is scored when the entire ball passes completely beyond the goal line‚ between the goal posts and under the crossbar provided it has not been deliberately thrown‚ carried or propelled by the hand or arm of a player of the attacking team.
- A goal may be scored during play directly from a:
- Kickoff
- Direct free kick
- Penalty kick
- Corner kick
- Drop ball
- A goal CANNOT be scored during play directly from a/an:
- Goal Kick *
- Goalkeeper’s throw‚ punt or drop–kick *
- Indirect free kick
- Throw–in
- Free kick into a team’s own goal
Goalie Restrictions
- The Goalie CANNOT throw or kick the ball over mid–field. The ball must bounce or be touched prior to mid–field.
- On any occasion when a player deliberately kicks the ball to his/her own goalkeeper‚ and on throw–ins‚ the goal keeper is not permitted to touch it with his/her hands. (indirect kick)
Penalties
- Slide Tackling is NOT ALLOWED. All slide tackles‚ or attempted slide tackles‚ shall be penalized as Tackling‚ resulting in a direct kick from the spot of the foul‚ as well as carry with it a Yellow card. Slide Tackles from behind are highly dangerous and will result in an AUTOMATIC RED CARD to the offender. However‚ goalies may slide toward an opponent in an attempt to block a shot provided the goalie does not lead with his feet. Goalies‚ who in the view of the referee‚ use excessive force or do not make an attempt to block a shot will be penalized‚ resulting in a penalty shot.
NOTE: The referee’s discretion will be used to determine whether a yellow or red card will be issued to the offender. Players may be ejected for such offense if the referee deems the slide tackle to be flagrant in nature.
Indirect Penalties
- A free kick for the offended team that must be touched twice before any goal can be scored. Indirect penalties are as follows:
- Dangerous Plays
- Obstruction (impeding the progress of an opponent)
- A Cautioned player (yellow card penalty)
- A player touching the ball a second time before the ball has been played by another player (kickoff‚ throw–in‚ free–kick‚ corner kick and penalty area)
Direct Penalties
- A free kick for the offended team that can be scored from the first touch. Direct penalties are as follows:
- Kicking
- Spitting
- Tripping
- Jumping at an opponent
- Charging into an opponent
- Striking or attempts to strike
- Tackling
- Pushing
- Handling (intent)
- Holding
- THERE IS NO OFFSIDES. However‚ screening or obstructing the goalie in any way will not be permitted. All goalie screens or obstructions shall result in an indirect kick from the spot of the foul.
- ALL free kicks (direct or indirect)‚ players of the opposing team must be at least eight yards from the ball when the kick is taken.
- ALL penalties on the defensive team occurring inside the penalty box‚ which would result in a direct kick‚ will result in a penalty shot for the offended team.
Protest
- There will be no protest involving official’s judgment (Spots‚ out–of–bounds‚ etc.).
- The two types of protest that can be made are Rule Interpretation and Eligibility.
- Protests of Rule Interpretation must be made immediately on the field of play. To protest‚ the protesting team must call a timeout at which time the supervisor will be called to handle the situation. If the protest is protest is upheld‚ the timeout will be returned to the team. If the protest is rejected‚ the timeout will be lost. The supervisor’s decision is final.
- Eligibility protests must be filed in writing by noon the working business day directly following the contest in question. (Ex. Thursday night contest‚ protest in by noon on Friday. Ex. Saturday afternoon contest‚ protest in by noon on Monday) All eligibility protest must be turned into room 172–A of the Johnson Center. If the protests are upheld it may call for the removal of the offending player(s) or team(s) from further competition.
Sportsmanship
- It is a violation to:
- Express derogatory remarks to officials or players.
- Exhibit aggressive play.
- Disconcert the shooter or goalie during penalty shots.
- The official may‚ according to degree and repetition:
- Warn offender(s). One warning only.
- Eject offender(s)
- Eliminate a team from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct detrimental to the game.
Yellow Card Offenses
- A player is cautioned and shown a Yellow card if commits any of the following:
- A player is guilty of unsporting behavior
- Shows dissent by word or action
- Delays the restart of play
- Persistent infringement
- Fails to respect the required distance for a restart
- Enters or Renters the field of play without the referee’s permission
- Leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission
- Slide tackling
- Jewelry
Red Card Offenses
- A player is EJECTED and shown a RED card if the player commits any of the following offenses:
- A player is guilty of serious foul play
- Is guilty of violent conduct
- Spits at an opponent or any other person
- Denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball
- Denies an obvious goal–scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offense punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick
- Uses offensive‚ or insulting or abusive language or gestures
- Receives a second caution in the same match
A PLAYER WHO IS SENT OFF MUST LEAVE THE VICINITY OF THE FIELD OF PLAY!
Unsportsmanlike Conduct
- It is the desire of the Campus Recreation Department that all participants display good sportsmanship at all times.
- Any player ejected from a game for any reason shall be suspended from all Intramural play until meeting with the Director of Intramurals. It is the responsibility of the player to contact the Campus Recreation Office to setup an appointment. If players are found to be participating before being reinstated they will be suspended from all Intramural Activity for the remainder of the semester. A team for which an ineligible player participated for will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated.
- Unsportsmanlike behavior (abusive/insulting language‚ disruptions of play‚ continuous arguing‚ etc.) by a player‚ coach‚ or spectator may result in penalties/technicals/yellow or red cards. Two (2) unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against one player constitute an automatic ejection. Three (3) unsportsmanlike penalties or (4) of any kind against a team will forfeit the contest. Unsportsmanlike violations by a spectator will be charged to the team captain. If the unsportsmanlike conduct is flagrant in nature then the offender will be disqualified immediately.
- Teams will receive sportsmanship grades‚ A thru E‚ for each game played and must maintain a 3.0 average sportsmanship rating to remain in the tournament
- In league play‚ teams must achieve a 3.0 average to be eligible for playoff competition.
Ejections
- Any player ejected from a game for any reason shall be suspended from all Intramural competition until he/she meets with the Intramural Director. No suspensions begin until the ejected participant has met with the Intramural Director‚ so it is in the player’s best interest to schedule a meeting as soon as possible following the ejection.
NOTE: Ejected persons will have two minutes to leave the Intramural contest area.
- Fighting: Fighting will not be tolerated in any form. Teams will be responsible for their players. All fighting incidents shall be reported to the Director of Intramural Sports and teams will be required to meet with the Director before they may play again. Teams and/or individuals may be subjected to expulsion from any further Intramural Sports.
- Any individual or team criticizing or otherwise obstructing‚ boisterously ridiculing or attempting to demean an official shall be liable to expulsion and disciplinary action. In addition‚ the game may be defaulted at the discretion of the referee‚ supervisor‚ or director.
The Department of Campus Recreation reserves the right to rule on any instances not covered in these rules.
All players must be able to furnish a valid UK ID upon request from an Intramural Employee.
