Softball

Current Amatuer Softball Association (ASA) Slow Pitch Rules will be followed with the exception of these UK Intramural supplements.

Eligibility
Intramurals are open to the University of Kentucky community as follows:

  • Students – all students currently enrolled at UK and BCTC.
  • Faculty and Staff – all regular UK and BCTC faculty and staff members. These faculty/staff members must be eligible for the UK faculty/staff “Blue/White Card.”
  • Spouses of eligible students‚ faculty and staff – may participate in Co–Rec events only and must be on the same roster with their UK/BCTC spouse.

Exceptions in Eligibility

  • Former or current professionals in an event or related event are ineligible.
  • Former college varsity players are ineligible for two full semesters following their last college contest played. These players may have last played during the 2001–2002 school year at the varsity level.
  • Players may play on ONLY one unisex team and ONLY one Co–Rec team regardless of division or level of play. The first team for which a player participates will be that player’s team for the duration of the tournament.

Identification
Valid UK and BCTC IDs are required for check–in and participation at all UK Intramural events.

  • Students – UK and BCTC students must present their valid UK or BCTC student photo ID.
  • Faculty and Staff – must present either their new UK Faculty/Staff photo ID card or their UK “Blue/White faculty/staff card” and another form of photo ID such as a driver’s license.
  • UK Medical Center personnel may present their Medical Center photo ID.
  • Bernard M. Johnson Center faculty/staff IDs may be used for Intramural purposes as photo ID only. They are not faculty/staff or other valid university IDs.
  • Spouses – of eligible participants must present a valid driver’s license for Co–Rec events.

UK Intramural Fields

  • Field 1 is located at the corner of Cooper Drive and University Drive.
  • Field 2 is located at the corner of the Johnson Center and the Outdoor Basketball Courts.
  • Entrance to the IM Fields may be found at either side of the horseshoe shaped fence at the east and west ends of the Johnson Center‚ at the gap in the middle of the Outdoor Basketball Courts and through either gate located along Cooper Drive.
  • Do not jump the fence. Jumping the fence will result in an ejection for the offending person.
  • The UK IM Fields are for University of Kentucky use only.

General

  • All participants must sign Intramural Waiver Forms to participate.
  • No Jewelry is permitted. See Jewelry listing.
  • Athletic apparel must be worn for athletic events. Shoes must be worn! Metal cleats‚ screw–ins‚ boots‚ and sandals are prohibited for all events.
  • Softball will be played as a single elimination tournament. Rosters are frozen after the team’s first played contest. Forfeits received or given do not count as played contests.
  • Each team will designate a captain who will be responsible for all players and spectators in attendance.
  • Any player ejected from a contest must leave the field immediately and must meet with the Intramural Director before any suspensions begin and before playing again.

The Team

  • Roster limits for all teams (Women‚ Men and Co–Rec) are 16 players.
  • Rosters are frozen after a team’s first played game.
  • Ten players are needed to field a full team.
  • A team needs at least nine (9) players to play an official game‚ with the tenth batter being an out.
  • Teams may bat their entire roster if they choose.
  • Should a player need to leave the game while a team is batting more than the minimum amount of players‚ the player must inform the score table before being removed from the batting order without penalty. Should the player be called to bat without having informed the score table‚ an out shall be recorded before the player is officially removed from the line–up.
  • Teams batting more than the minimum may not add more players to the batting order once the game has begun.
  • Teams playing with less than the minimum amount of players may add the player(s) necessary to complete the minimum to the bottom of the team order but may not add more than the minimum.
  • A team having less than nine will have to forfeit following the 10–minute rule application.
  • Each team shall designate a captain; this person shall be responsible for all players and spectators on and off the field.
  • Players may play on ONLY one unisex team and ONLY one Co–Rec team regardless of division or level of play. The first team for which a player participates will be that player’s team for the duration of the tournament.

The Game

  • Teams must be prepared to play at the scheduled time including line–ups completed.
  • The 10–Minute Rule is in effect. Any team not prepared to play with the minimum of nine players will be penalized 2 runs beginning with the start of the game clock and each subsequent minute they are unprepared. After the 10 minutes has elapsed‚ the game will be forfeit.
  • Games will be 7 innings or approximately 50 minutes whichever comes first.
  • New innings will NOT be started after 50 minutesof play has elapsed. Once an inning has started‚ however‚ it will be completed. (Extra innings will be played to break a tie.)
  • All batters will begin each plate appearance with a 1–ball and 1–strike count.
  • A foul ball on the third strike is an out.
  • There is no stealing.
  • The IM Director or the Graduate Assistant on duty shall have sole jurisdiction to call a game due to inclement weather.
  • Mercy Rule: a game in which a team is down by 20 or more runs after the 4th inning or 15 runs after the 5th inning will be ended.

Ground Rules

  • ONLY UK IM SOFTBALL BATS MAY BE USED DURING IM GAMES.
  • UK IM will provide all game balls.
  • Umpires shall award runners two bases on overthrows that go out–of–play. The two bases awarded shall be from where the runners were when the ball was released from the thrower’s hand.
  • Any ball hit or thrown over the fence surrounding the IM field complex shall be out of bounds.
  • Any ball hit or thrown over the drainage mound by the Johnson Center shall be out of bounds.
  • Other out of bounds areas will be marked with orange paint lines. These will include but are not limited to areas behind the backstops and the drainage area under Cooper Drive.
  • Any hit ball clearing the designated fence on a fly will be a home run.
  • Any hit ball bouncing over the designated fence shall be ruled a ground rule double.
  • There is no digging in during an at–bat. First Team Offense will be a warning. Second and subsequent offenses will result in outs.
  • CONTACT – Base–runners must slide into bases at which plays are being made or avoid contact altogether. Contact in this case may result in the base–runner being called out for not sliding. Excessive contact may result in an ejection of the base–runner.

Apparel

  • Jewelry is not permitted. See Jewelry listing.
  • Athletic apparel must be worn for athletic events.
  • Team shirts/jerseys must be similar in color. IM jerseys will be available. Numbers are required and must be on the front‚ back or preferably both.
  • Athletic shoes must be worn! Metal cleats‚ screw–on cleats‚ boots and sandals are not permitted for IM play.
  • Cleats must be either molded rubber or rubber screw–ins provided there is not metal showing in the tips. These are basically the same requirements as with flag football.

Jewelry

  • Jewelry found on an offensive player will constitute an out.
  • Jewelry found on a defensive player will constitute the move of all base–runners ahead one base and the option of the batter to take first base.

Protests

  • There will be no protest involving judgment calls. Protests involving a rule interpretation MUST BE MADE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. If the field officials are unable to provide a clear interpretation‚ the supervisor shall be called in. His/her decision shall be final.
  • Eligibility protest must be submitted in writing to room IM offices in the Johnson Center by noon on the following business day (Monday thru Friday) and must clearly state who is being protested and on what basis.

Co–Rec Rules

  • ASA Co–Rec. Rules will be in effect.
  • Roster limits for all teams (Women‚ Men and Co–Rec) are 16 players.
  • Rosters are frozen after a team’s first played game.
  • A full team shall consist of 10 players‚ 5 men and 5 women.
  • Eight players are needed for an official game to be played with the ninth and tenth batter being outs. (4 men and 4 women).

Batting

  • Teams may bat their entire roster if they choose.
  • Co–Rec team batting orders must alternate sexes.
  • Back–to–back batters of the same sex will have an automatic out placed in between.
  • Any walk to a male batter will result in a two (2) base award. The next batter (a female) will bat. Exception: With two outs‚ the female batter has the option to walk or bat.

In the Field

  • Any five women or five men in the batting order may play the field.
  • There are no restrictions regarding gender as to where the fielders play in the field.
  • There are no restrictions regarding gender for pitcher and catcher.
